Older movies generate larger files

Post by MonkeyBites »

After encoding a couple of HD movies using Handbrake, I noticed that older movies tend to create much larger files compared to newer movies of the same size (while the perceived picture quality of the newer flicks is usually much better). Is there any difference in the transfer process from analog source material to digital versions between older and newer movies?

If you are using CRF, it costs a *lot* more bits to encode noise from older films than it does "cleaner", more modern content. This is normal. It can be mitigated somewhat through filtering, but the filtering provided in HandBrake is very basic and will not approach what can be achieved through other tools like AVISynth.
