Still Objects Wobbling

Hello. I am beginning the process of moving my DVD collection to a HTPC hard drive for viewing in my home theater.

Most action scenes look great in most Handbrake conversions, however in all the Handbrake settings I have tried, in some very low movement scenes, I get a slight image wobble in areas with movement. Like if someone moves in front of a window, the whole window wobbles slightly on the wall. The original VIDEO_TS files moved to the hard drive don't have this issue, only any converted Handbrake files. I'm using Media Player Classic for its broad video compatabilitty.

Most Handbrake videos have converted to just over 1GB from a 4GB DVD video. I am more than willing to have up to a 2GB to 2.5GB result to get rid of the wobble.

I don't know the technical name for the "wobble" so I don't know how to search for it. What is it called, and what should I do in Handbrake to elimate it.

Below is a log of the last attempt made of my Rambo III DVD. It was converted from the TS_VIDEO DVD fileset from my hard drive (ripped from the DVD using DVD Shrink). I used Handbrake's "Normal" preset, but changed the "Quality" setting to "Avg Bitrate" and set it to 2500. The result was a 3.5GB original DVD file set coverted to a 1.6GB m4v. The action scenes look great to me, just the low movement scenes still have the wobble issue.

Need a complete Activity Log from an actual encode. That looks like just one from scanning the disk.

OK, I think this is the log you want. This is from my last conversion which I believe used the Normal preset, but I changed the video quality to an average bitrate of 3500 and selected 2 pass encoding. I still get some fixed item wobble in low motion scenes around the moving subject. It seems that the background wants to move with the slowly moving subject, then corrects itself back into place.

This conversion resulted in a 2.6GB m4v file from the original 3.6GB DVD files. It's strange because I cannot find any problem with normal to high motion scenes. They look great.

Two things here:
The video wobble sounds like an interlacing issue. I was hoping for confirmation from the activity log, but I don't see it.
3500 kbps is pretty high; for this source it yields a Rate Factor of 15.65 which is generally excessive for DVD sources.

Since your playback target is an HTPC, start with the High Profile preset and drop the AC3 passthrough audio unless you want 5.1 sound. HP includes decomb by default which should take care of the interlacing. Leave the video quality targeting at constant quality.

If the wobble is gone but you're not quite happy with the video quality, drop the RF to 17-18ish. If the wobble is still there, paste the new activity log here inside

Just reran the DVD conversion set at the High Profile preset. I left all settings as is. Resulted in a 1.2GB file. Still have the slight intermittant wobble in low motion scenes, same spots as before. Seems to occur with slight head/body movements in an otherwise still scene. Other than those few spots, I can't see any visual difference between the m4v conversion and the orginal DVD source.

Does your player support weighted p-frames? Does your encode still wobble if you don't decomb?

@mduell There's an off-chance the "wobble" is a frame being blended by decomb, but I have a feeling it's more a decoding issue.

He had the wobble in his original two activity logs without decomb too.

Not sure about weighted p-frame support. I have the following players:
Media Player Classic 1.3.1405.0
Windows Media Player 12
Windows Media Center (Win 7 64-bit)
VLC Media Player 1.0.3

All display the issue. Media Player Classic is my player of choice.

Audio issue:

With this last HP conversion I selected only AC-3 passthrough. I only want DD audio. Oddly, Media Player Classic doesn't see any audio. VLC will play the HP conversion AC-3 audio. Is VLC my only player choice I have if I want AC-3 5.1 from a Handbrake conversion?

Are you seeing the wobble only when you look very closely, and is it a very small vibration, especially visible on patterns and edges? If so, I think you might be referring to the slight pulsing and warping that comes on series of b-frames. This distortion results from the fact that b-frames have lower allocated bits, and thus preserve the image less exactly. I haven't really considered it much of an issue, so I haven't tried to solve it.
