Variance in file sizes

Post by Spiffyguy »

I just upgraded to 0.9.4 on Windows 7 64 bit. Works great, thanks. I am curious about file sizes. I am using the MKV container with the High Profile preset, I change the DRC on both audio streams to 2.5 and add forced subtitles only. I have been encoding a bunch of things and I am seeing weird patterns with files sizes. I encoded 2 movies, one 90 minutes the other 120. The 120 minute movie was a smaller file size than the 90 minute, 1.3 gb vs the 1.5 for the 90 minute. So I turned on logging in case there was an issue. I am seeing the same thing with encoding episodes of Lost. Once came out at 938 mb while another was 543mb. Both are the same length. I am sure there is a good explanation for this I was just curious. Both files were created of dvdfab, Main Movie of the episode title track.

here is the log for the 938 mb file\

Rip done!
HandBrake has exited.

I am sure there is a proper explanation for this oddity. I just figured most of the file sizes would be about the same.

Thanks

Re: Variance in file sizes

...what parts of the explanations in the release announcement and documentation weren't adequate? I wasn't kidding when I said constant quality varies bitrate and leads to unpredictable file sizes that vary from source to source.

That's where you're wrong. The whole point of quality-based encoding is that different sources requires different bitrate (and therefore file sizes) to achieve the same quality.

So, constant quality mode means that the quality will be about the same, but the file sizes will vary.
