How much faster is HandBrake SVN2845 Snapshot?

I recently posted the Monty Python thread - I was using a PPC G4 w/ only 1.25 Ghz of RAM and the new snapshot..........

Problems solved w/ Monty Python, I downloaded the snapshot to my 2009 Mini w/ 2 Ghz of RAM. I'm currently encoding True Lies (don't laugh) and it is encoding in 1/3 the time 9.3 uses............ WITH the same settings of Apple Universal/65.2% CQ/Default Decomb/Denoise @ Medium/De-Block @ 10/ AND the LibDivNav set in preferences (same settings I was using w/ the PPC) - I don't mess w/ the cropping.............

Is this the speed which we can expect 9.4 to run? If the encode runs as currently timed, I'll have saved a LOT of time encoding my DVD's to H.264 for use in Front Row - is it perfect - no, but my next acquisition is a Denon w/ upscaling for my standard definition DVD's................

So far, the new snapshot only "broke" when I tried Austin Powers 2, but I'm currently re-encoding it...... I'll report back later.

Should I have posted a log for the "broke" version? I'm sorry but I didn't think to do that before I started re-encoding.............

Thanks again, HB has never let me down - yeah, my needs are simple, but I just want to get my DVD library onto Front Row - or should I consider using Plex (another thread - I know).......

Keep up the good work! It's a shame you don't allow "gifts" or "donations" but I understand why, I just wish I could offer any of the developers in San Diego a cold one...............

i know that this is an "unstable" build, but it's amazing. It just works faster than the stable build, I like the 64 bit with snow leopard.

Great Work, and thank you!

It keeps crashing in snow leopard, especially after i load the files. Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it doesn't. Any ideas why? Also why the hell didn't they make this program able to batch convert..so annoying i have to select a file one by one, add to queue, add file, add to queue, this is time consuming if you've got A LOT of files.

If it's crashing, then post a bug report using the following "how to post a bug report" guide
Also why the hell didn't they make this program able to batch convert
Firstly, the attitude isn't appreciated.
Second, We've stated many times that this is a feature that will appear in a later version (not 0.9.4) when several other features are up to par to allow this to work properly.

Breakdown of Snapshot on Austin Powers

OK, "Spy Who Shagged Me" got almost completely through the encode and then failed - I re-opened HB and it saw the encode in the queue - tried to re-start, it wouldn't.

Using PB G4 w/ 1.25 Ghz, VLC, ripped w/ MTR 2.6.6, settings for Apple/Universal, 65.20% CQ, Medium Denoise, Default Decomb, Deblock set at 10. These settings also broke on my 2009 Intel Mini w/ 2 Ghz, same settings for "Pale Rider", got almost to the end of the encode and then failed - just like Austin Powers. I reverted to 9.3 for both encodes and they are working fine.

The snapshot seems to work a lot faster, True Lies encoded in 1/3 the normal time (on my Mini) but Autin Powers broke on my PPC G4 and Pale Rider on my Intel Mini.

Here's the log.........

Looks like a dvdnav issue - you could probably get the snapshot to work for those discs by disabling dvdnav in Preferences…

Thanks! I'll try that next disc, Austin Powers should be ready in about an hour.

However, I had to use the "DVDNAV" to get my disc 3 of Monty Python to encode. I guess it varies by disc.

I'll report back, but do the developers want to post on this thread regarding "snapshot" bugs or do they want it on the "bugs" thread since the snapshot is not a complete build yet?

Thanks again!

Answer is in the first post:

Sorry........ still kind of finding my way around here - I'm trying to do it the right way.......

I'll post further response to this on the "bug thread"................

sdjeff4sc, your problem with austin powers is a problem with how MTR ripps the disc when using "Main Feature Extraction" mode. It creates an image with no menus, but leaves navigation commands in place that attempt to jump to the menu. If you use full disc mode, or just skip MTR all together and let handbrake encode straight from disc, it works fine. I've checked in a fix, so the next snapshot shouldn't have this problem.

When you say no more ogg, or avi support, (not to be dense) but does that mean you won't be able to convert from those formats anymore?

Oh no, you'll still be able to convert from those formats, along with anything else the current builds of ffmpeg can reliably read/decode. You just won't be able to write to them anymore.

First thing, this build is incredibly fast! Thank you for creating a 64 bit version.

With that being said, the main issue that I am having with the 64 bit version of this build is it will not allow me to select the source, then start the encoding process without shutting down Handbrake and restarting. I have to select the source, "Add to Queue", quit Handbrake, restart Handbrake, reload Queue, then I am able to encode.

I also acts the same with with selecting a second source after adding the first to the queue. I have to "Add to Queue", quit Handbrake, restart Handbrake, reload Queue, select second source, "Add to Queue", quit Handbrake again, restart Handbrake again, reload Queue again, then I am able to encode.

And so on.

Thanks!!!

How do you adjust the quality of the encode using SVN2845? Looking at presets, quality is set to -q 20 (appletv) where as current stable is -q .59. Has the scale changed or am I lost?

The scale hasn't changed as such, the way it's reported has... we kept encountering issues with the whole percentage thing where people would think it referred to percentage quality of the source, then crank the thing to 100%.

The percentage slider under 0.9.3 was expressed as (51 - RF) / 51 - plugging in some numbers gives us (51 - 20) / 51 = 61%... so the actual quality hasn't changed very much between 0.9.3 and current code.

Has anyone else noticed a *significant* decrease in file size moving from SVN2829 to SVN2845? I'm seeing a reduction of 30-50% on nearly every file. I am encoding to H.264/MKV with the high profile settings in both cases, adjusting to CRF 16 (69%). The only setting difference I can find is the loss of pyramidal b-frames due to the fact that they're disabled in the new build, but from what I understand having those on should shrink files a bit, not grow them. I've done a lot of side by side comparisons, and I just can't see a visual difference between the two. Have there been substantial improvements in the encoding algorithm efficiency, or is it likely something nefarious is going on here?

x264's new mbtree algorithm generally results in smaller files for a given quality. It also results in changes that makes it difficult to directly compare an old encode with a new one. Sometimes a new encode will result in slightly higher quality with the exact same settings and sometimes slightly lower. The overall distribution when looking at a large collection of encodes is actually tighter (meaning more consistent quality from source to source). There was much discussion and comparisons done when mbtree first arrived here http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php ... lit=mbtree

Thanks! That was what I was looking for, couldn't figure out how to bump it up to 68% with CLI.

68% is way too high for DVD sources with the newer x264 builds, imho.

just wanted to say this build is great. much faster encoding, smaller file sizes, improved interface. great work :D

@nightstrm I am currently using the newest build and am mostly using it for animation DVDs. My problem is that if I don't have it set to 100% (0RF) it ends up looking very blocky every other time something movies. I wasn't having this problem before I updated. Here are my current settings I am using in order to get around this

Code: Select all

:File type = MKV H.264 (x264)
:Frame rate = Same as source
:b-pyramid=1
:b-adapt=2
:me=umh
:subq=9
:analyse=all
:trellis=0
:bframes=16
:ref=6
:merange=32
:no-dct-decimate=1
:Quality = Constant 100%
:Decombing = Default and Preferred (ie the bar is pulled all the way over to Decombing)
My main purpose is to archive anyway so loosing out on space really isn't that big of a deal its just kind of annoying as it stands now. I will encode something short on what used to be around my normal settings when i get a chance and post the log if that will help.

Also I play everything using VLC. I have the buffering for everything set very high, and have it set to be using both CPUs, and have frame skipping off, so I don't think its a player issue, and when I tried making an MP4 file and used quicktime it did the same thing.

I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8 on an iMac 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of ram.

Thanks in advance for any help, and thanks for developing such a great tool.

RoverTX, please create a new topic for your issue.

In this new topic you create, please provide an encode log for a non-100% encode where you have the issue with the snapshot.

I rip my DVDs with DVDShrink before encoding them with handbrake. DVDShrink gives me an "image" of my DVD containing subtitles.
Is there a way I can use these subtitles to include them (not burn them) into the mkv file i will generate with handbrake.

Select your subtitle stream, deselect "Burned In" and optionally select "Default".
