Hi,

I encoded a DVD following advice found in this topic: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8837 (DVD to H264 at full quality with handbrake?)

I was using H.264 with loose anamorphic, CQ set to 62%, film preset, AC3 sound. My command line was:

Code: Select all

-f mkv --crop 71:73:11:5 -P -e x264 -q 0.62 -a 1 -E ac3 -B 160 -R 0 -6 dpl2 -D 1 -x ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=6:weightb=1:direct=auto:b-pyramid=1:me=umh:subq=9:analyse=all:8x8dct=1:trellis=1:no-fast-pskip=1:psy-rd=1,1 -C 2 -v
(I left out the long --markers option above.) I set the crop amounts myself so that the resulting dimensions would be multiples of 16. The source was DVD5, the result is a file that is 5.3 GB in size! Mediainfo says the following:

Code: Select all

Why do you think the file is this big? What should I change to make a smaller file (perhaps between 2..3 GB) while retaining quality as close to the source as possible?

It depends what you are playing the files back on to give an acurate answer.

I would recommend using the AppleTV preset and setting that at 62%, this gives a great image. Not quite the same as DVD, but pretty close. At a distance, how much differance can you really see in the end?

of course, without a complete activity log (which is required btw) its hard to tell, you are almost 3 hrs. running time, if the source is grainy enough or complex it *could* get that high filesize wise.

Without an activity log its very hard to say, so you won't get much help in all likelihood.

Sorry that I failed to post the activity log. See below. The file will be played back on a 1360x768 32" LCD TV via a windows HTPC.

Heat is very grainy and very long, I have it on my appletv. that file size seems a touch high, but I would try
the atv preset at 62% and something like

Code: Select all

ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=3:direct=auto:no-fast-pskip=1:me=umh:subq=7:analyse=all:b-adapt=2:8x8dct=1
which put me right around 3.18 GB ( the opts when I did that were slightly different, but those should get you there) and see how you like the look.
Oh, and loose anamorphic (which gets set when you use the AppleTV preset) if you want matroska then just switch the container (format).

Edit: oh, and excellent movie btw. :)

If even 3 GB is too large for comfort, you could consider dropping the CQ value down a point or two. With all that grain, it might not make too much of a difference.

Another problem is the excessive psy-trellis used in some of the 0.9.3 presets... consensus seems to say that it should be "psy-rd=1,0.2".

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll make test encodes using them and report my findings.

Hi,

I made an encode with the following settings.

I started with the appletv presets, set crop so that the result would not be resized, reduced CQ to 59% and changed/added the advanced settings according to what dynaflash wrote:

Code: Select all

--crop 71:73:11:5 -P -e x264 -q 0.59 -a 1 -E ac3 -B 160 -R 48 -6 dpl2 -D 1 -x level=30:cabac=0:ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=3:weightb=1:direct=auto:no-fast-pskip=1:me=umh:subq=7:analyse=all:b-adapt=2:8x8dct=1 -C 2 -v
The result is a 2.3 GB file that even looks a little better (smoother) than the first attempt. Seems that I'll have to delve deeper into x.264 options if I want to make quality encodes!

Thanks again.

when it comes to x264 its all about the options. :)
