adding subtitle option

Post by miltk »

Description of problem or question:

i'd like to have the option of subtitles or no subtitles rather than burn in. how do i do this. up until now i've always burned in, however i've been thinking it might be better to have the option when i play the movie. can i do this?

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

windows7 pro

So, you've asked for something that even the "ancient" version you're using can do, but not told us things like, "What type subtitles are your asking about, and what container type are you using?"

These and many other questions are why encode logs are REQUIRED.

Certain subtitle types are only allowed in MKV files, for example. If you try to put PGS subtitles from a Bluray into an MP4 file, for example, they MUST be burned in to MP4.

Logs show us what you're trying to do, even if you don't understand the cause.

No need for the MakeMKV log.

This particular MKV file has the following subtitle tracks available:

Stream #0:2(eng): Subtitle: dvd_subtitle, 720x480 (default)
Stream #0:3(eng): Subtitle: subrip

On the subtitle tab, "burn in" was checked for the first. If you want it "switchable" (able to be turned off), the Burn box should NOT be checked. This will work for MP4 files in most players. Many presets for MP4 include selection rules that have "burn in" checked, because of the restrictions on types that can be included as separate tracks. You can create your own presets that do NOT default to "burn in" and save them for later use.

The subrip subtitle is most likely the Closed Caption stream from the disk; this is something MakeMKV started making available a few versions back. You can have handbrake include it by selecting it on the Subtitles tab.

That's the beauty of free software - it doesn't cost anything to play with it, other than time. You can speed things up by only encoding short sections as you try the various parameters.

For something like this, using a player like VLC on the source can let you check each audio and subtitle track to see what they contain. The Forced checkbox can be a real bother - it will only include subtitles that are flagged as forced, which is actually quite rare, meaning you get nothing in the result.
