dro wrote:I had this problem with Eragon. The MTR ripped copy on disk was fine, but the HB .mv4 (Apple TV) dropped the audio at chapter 3. I used MPEG Streamclip to open the MTR rip and fix timecode breaks, then had it export to MPEG-4. It plays fine now on ATV with no audio dropouts.

So I'm not sure if it's an HB issue, but there seems to be a timecode issue which MPEG Streamclip can fix.

Edit: I had the movie playing while I made this post, and a few minutes afterwards I realized the movie's audio is now out of sync. It didn't start out that way, but about half way thru it gets out of sync.
I just did that DVD today, mine works fine...here is what I used:

Code: Select all

./HandBrakeCLI -i /New\ Downloads/ERAGONWS/ -o /New\ Downloads/EragonWS.mp4 -p -2 -e x264 -b 3000 -r 23.976 -E facc -B 160 -R 44.1 -6 6ch -v
Make sure you do a Full Disk Extraction with MTR.

has anyone been able to replicate the audio drop using CLI ?

I ask this because I have no yet been able to get any audio drops encoding with CLI, whereas the same movie, same source from my hard drive will result in an audio drop when encoding using the exact same settings in the GUI.

so, once again, has anyone been able to replicate an audio drop in CLI mode?

Yes. And I have said as much multiple times on this thread. I know it's hard to read through every post and remember every variation.

Hi, Ive had the same problem of audio cutting out in various movies at the start of a new chapter using Handbrake .8.5 using my intel iMac. However when i've tried ripping the same DVD with the same settings on my powerbook G4 and Handbrake .7.1 the audio was present!

After starting another thread on the topic (not knowing of this one) I was reffered here and read through all 17 pages. I'm getting the same problem on a c2d 24" imac on "Pans Labyrinth" and am willing to futz around with different settings to see if I can find something that works. The first thing I'm going to try is MTR as a first step to get it on my HDD prior to using HB

One question - I'm not a CLI ninja and would love to use the GUI to help build CLI commands. Is there a way to configure via the GUI and then "export the CLI command" so that I can tweak it from there and try running it directly?

Also: if the developers have any specific settings/approaches they would like to see please let me know and I'm happy to spend the time and mail over any resulting logs.

Thanks again for everyones hard work on this problem - I know how difficult bugs like this can be to track down, particularly in something as complex video encoding and manipulation.

If anyone is using recent svn builds and is trying to trouble shoot this issue, please update to rev 592 out of the svn and enable verbose in the preferences in the gui, you can then get output just like using the cli as well, x264 is updated and may not produce as many drops using the gui.

Frankly, I am getting none :) but you can try it out. As well, with the new "Debug" window, you will get output just like you get with the cli so you can check for similar messages.

Save it as a preset and then use manicure.sh: http://handbrake.m0k.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1348

It would be nice if someone could correlate audio drop-outs with timecode gaps by ripping known problem titles in HB and then running them through Mpeg Streamclip (with the QT MPEG-2 Component) to fix audio timecodes. The problem areas and the gaps will, I suspect, fit closely together. Also, compare output from the debug log window in the gui to ripping the same title in the CLI.

Keep in mind that a lot of people in these 17 pages have no clue what they're talking about.

A lot of others will claim one thing on one page and another on the next.

Something many contributors to this thread seem to not understand is that not everyone here has the same problem. Audio dropping out is a symptom that can be caused by many different things. You'd do well to understand libhb/sync.c before theorizing. It will help you understand exactly when and why HB will add silence or trash audio.

jbrjake,

I'm always down for a test...

I'll use Deja Vu (since that is the only one that gives me issues).

I'll let you know!

Case in point, I just checked my encode of DeJa Vu yesterday, hate to say it, but perfect audio. Now, I should say this in on an intel MBP C2D.
MTR full disk rip, HB-Apple TV preset encode.

Go figure.

Got it working!

Post by sparktography »

Last night I did quite a bit of testing. First off I tried one more time with the released handbrake beta with the same results: encode framerate dropped 15 minutes in to 5-7FPS and the audio dissapeared at the same time.

Next step I tried was to download MTR (the released version, not the beta) and rip Pans Labyrinth to my HDD, then try the released handbrake beta with the same results.

Finally I followed the instructions located at http://handbrake.m0k.org/trac/wiki/CompileGuide (an excellent guide BTW) to download the latest SVN release and compile it myself.

The nightly build from last nights failed in the same manner when working directly from the DVD disc, but did manage to do a full encode with sound when I tried ripping from the VOB files on my hard drive.

The settings I got to work: AppleTV Preset with chapters turned off, subtitles turned on, and 1pass encoding at 2500kbits from the VOB's on the HDD.

I'm not sure if that information will help any of the developers figure out what the problem is, but I'm very pleased that the nightly build fixed it for me.

Mind you - I'm still out a bunch of time because I forgot to check the %^@$#% deinterlace box so I need to re-encode the whole thing, but I've got that going right now.

Cheers!

I Hate you!

As soon as I get time. I'll do some more testing. Like jbrjake stated (and dynaflash keeps throwing in my face) what works for some, don't work for others. There have been many complaints about different DVDs that I have posted perfect results (/w CLI syntax) with.

Had issues with Grandmas Boy audio cutting out around 20% or so. Used the cli version, and no issues. Used the arguments for HB-Apple TV.

Tried Accepted again, this time with the Linux/i386 CLI version (mixing it up as much as possible). I used the following script:

Code: Select all

/usr/local/bin/HandBrakeCLI -i /video/dvd/rip/$1 -o /video/dvd/mp4/$1.mp4 -p -2 -e x264 -m -b 3000 -r 23.976 -E facc -B 160 -R 44.1 -6 6ch -v
and get the same kind of audio drop-out as OSX/GUI.

God I hope this is figured out soon. I've only been able to use my AppleTV to watch TV shows.

And for those interested, I have the same audio dropouts with VisualHub.

Maybe it's ffmpegx? After all it hasn't been updated in over 6 months.

I can confirm having the same experience: after compiling the latest build from SVN, I still get audio drops when encoding directly from disc, but full disk MTR rips now encode perfectly.

Um...ok...I don't know what to say?

I FINALLY GOT DEJA VU TO ENCODE!

(Ok dynaflash you can flame me)

Now I'm not 100% sure what did it, but here we go:

Media:
Deja Vu DVD copy (Original DVD---MTR---DTOX2---Toast) = I noticed this removed RIPGUARD and left only ACrRoS(sp). This was evident when I put the DVD back through MTR for current test purposes.

HandBrake:
r590(?) Dated 20070520
r593 Dated 20070522

MTR:
3r14d

Method(s):

Ran folder through r590(?) using AppleTV Preset, BUT changed bit rate to 3000 and mixdown to 6ch.

--Framerate dropped @ ~30%--

Ran folder through r593 using AppleTV Preset (didn't change ANYTHING this time)

--Perfect encode @ ~17fps(slower than usual, but I understand why 'Advanced Settings')---
--Clean Debug--

Code: Select all

All the other times I had failure with the CLI, I've mimicked the AppleTV preset except for 3000 bit rate and 6ch mixdown. The other thing that the AppleTV preset does that I didn't was to change the default values for "B-Frames", "SME" and "Trellis". I will rerun again in the CLI with the same settings and see if I can produce another good encode.

I know there are a few variables, but I'll see what I can do to knock them down.

Cavalicious: Excellent Post, thanks for the methodical testing.

My only caution - it is possible that none of the variables you speak of are the issue here. In other words, if the race condition theory has any validity then it is possible that you will get non-repeatable results with exactly the same settings, same machine, same source, same everything.

I don't really know how multithreaded (irrespective of the number of CPUs) HB is or the locking models used, so this is all conjecture from past experience rather than any knowledge of HB (no I haven't read libhb/sync.c yet). I have however (in a past life as a developer) worked on exactly such an issue, where different results happened with no apparent correlation with the input variables. That's the very nature of race conditions and they can be tricky to isolate. Formal modeling is perhaps the best way to tackle it, because any debugging observations can modify the conditions enough to hide the issue (in a Heisenberg sense).

Loss of sound and slow encoding (~10 fps)

Post by Micronin »

Reading this thread, I realize that I was not the only one to encounter this problem of loss of sound and CPU usage in the middle of an encoding.

In January, I had to encode around 250 DVDs for an VOD application.

At this level of usage, quality is an issue and reliability of the encoder is really important for us.

The encoding parameter were the following :

From a VIDEO_TS folder
Format Mpeg4
Encoder : ffmpeg
1 pass
Bitrate : 2048 kbps
Audio : video MPEG-4 / Audio AAC 44.1 Khz / Bitrate 192 kbps

Anyway, I’ve tried numerous combinations of parameters without having THE problem solved.

My feeling is that Handbrake is unable to encode certain medias (qualities of DVD) and/or VIDEO_TS folder (how the original DVD has been burned or pressed).

To try to help the research on the problem, I can give the following information.

It is very difficult to find a remedy to this problem, because the symptoms seems erratic. Some of the encoded batches got a 60% success some others got a 30%. The phenomenon is unexpectable. I found several turn-around and solutions, but no one was not necessarily working for every DVD. So I established the following encoding procedure :

1. RIP with MTR the main feature of the DVD
2. Encode the VIDEO_TS with Handbrake 0.8.5 b1 on a MacPro, 2 duo 2 2GHz
3. If the encoding fail, I try to encode directly from the DVD driver (no RIP with MTR)
4. If the encoding fail, I try to encode directly from an external DVD driver (Samsung write master)
5. If the encoding fail, I try to encode directly from an external DVD driver
6. If the encoding fail, I try to encode directly from an internal DVD driver of a MacBook Pro 2.16 Ghz
7. If the encoding fail, I used D-Vision (longer encoding, worst quality of images, but more robust) sorry for the betrayal.
8. If the encoding fail, I copied the film on a home cinema hard drive (Panasonic DMR-EH55) and made a DVD with if (because the compression of the system, the film was notably deteriorated).
9. From this new DVD I processed an encoding with D-Vision into a Mpeg4 file (sorry again).

At this level, I can give my 2 only certitudes :
a. Handbrake 0.8.5 b1 can not at all encode a DVD burned with a Panasonic DMR-EH55 set. After a while, I loss the sound and the encoding goes for ever with a fps around 10.
b. D-Vision can encode a DVD burned with a Panasonic DMR-EH55 set with 100% of success.

Because I like how Handbrake is made, its quality of encoding (when it works), its speed, I really would prefer to use it and I hope that my story will help to make this great product progress. Then a partnership could be expectable. Unfortunately, I am not a developer, but I could do a little financial contribution to your work and also do some work as beta tester.

i recomend you change your first step here to full disk instead of main feature. it seems to give a greater success rate and only takes a few minutes more to rip, there might be something about the way MTR is reauthoring to strip out all other content.

FWIW, I've had these failures on a single-core non-ht P4 on Linux, so while there might be thread race issues, it's probably not an SMP issue.

I'm trying an encode again on PowerPC, but it takes almost a day on my newest PowerPC, so I'll report back later tonight or tomorrow.

Note, however, that the disk is chock-full of PTS discontinuities.

This is what I've been trying to explain to people for months.

The problem is with the media. The DVD was mastered badly. There shouldn't be *any* PTS discontinuities on a commercial DVD. Having them at cell breaks is sloppy. The way a "race condition" factors in is that HB can only figure out how to compensate for discontinuities by comparing progress on the video and audio FIFOs in sync.c.

Without disagreeing with you in the slightest, I'll just state the obvious - el-crapo mastering jobs seem to be the norm in the industry so Handbrake probably needs to know how to deal with them to be a useful tool for its intended audience.

And not trying to sound like a broken record (really!) the MPlayer source can at least be a tool for learning how to deal with them effectively.

et tu Brute!

I've been saying the same thing...funny thing is I would suspect DTOX2 to clean up the mastering issues. Maybe my expectations are too high for DTOX2?

That being said, Someone else who is having trouble with no audio should try the exact same settings I used (/w Advanced Settings), and report back.

I would, but Deja Vu was the only one giving me issues.

One disc I can't get audio out of is "Cry In The Dark" which is an older movie. I ripped the full disk with MTR 3 to my hard disk and tried encoding with h.264 (Main) and I get no audio right from the beginning of the encode. The frame rate is about 8.

I ran it through DTOX and still no audio.

I used HandbrakeCLI and no audio.
