Colors look horrible when using anamorphic (with log)

Post by SoylentGreen »

Hello again

Here is the same post, but with a log

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I'm not exactly sure how the describe this effect, nor what to search on.

Anyway, I'm trying to encode some TV shows (24 season 2 to be exact), if I choose 'keep aspect ratio', the colors, and encode look pretty good, but I would prefer not to loose the lines of resolution. So, if I try to encode using anamorphic, using either strict, or loose, the colors look horrible. It is as if the color palette was severely reduced, the colors look 'blocky' (not sure if this is the right term", so what was before a nice gradient, now looks like big blocks of color. It does not seem to matter much what encoding setting I use, I've pretty much tried the all. The only thing that seems to cause the color problem is encoding with anamorphic. If I'm not describing this effect clearly, I'd be happy to post some images.

So, my question is, A: does anybody know what is going on with my encodes, and b: is there any way to either use anamorphic, or some way to encode the at the full resolution, without getting the color issues.

thanks

Um, are you sure it isn't the deinterlacer making things look blocky? Why would you run deinterlacing like that on 24 anyway? Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to detelecine and decomb?

On TV shows, I usually just de-interlace, aren't most TV shows interlaced? On other shows, like Andromeda were interlaced fairly badly, and a d-interlace cleaned it up a lot.

I'l give de-telecine and a de-comb a try to see how it looks.

I was under the assumption that it was mostly movies that were telecined, stuff that was shot on film, then transfered to broadcast TV, so I assumed that TV shows because they were intended for broadcast TV were not telecined.

Enable deteleceine and decomb and let Handbrake figure it out for you.

Really, it's that easy (100% of my recent encodes have been this way and they all look great)! :D

I do the same. Decomb does all the work for you by choosing when to Deinterlace. I dont know what the advantages are to using Deinterlace over Decomb now.

I dont know what the advantages are to using Deinterlace over Decomb now.
It only deinterlaces required frames. If you deinterlace a frame that's not interlaced, you'll lose quality.

What he said. :D

I know jbrjake (decomb filter author) has quite an indepth explaination of the decomb filter and how it works ready to go in the wiki... it will become available once .9.3 is finally released. Pretty neat stuff if you ask me.

Is there ever a case where you'd want to use Deinterlace over Decomb?

I tried some new settings, as suggested, enable detelecine, and decomb, it seems to look much better.

Here are the settings I currently use to encode TV shows like 24, I find that encodes end up around 600MB, which is fine, although I suppose I could try to drop the quality setting to see if there is any noticeable degradation in video quality. With these settings, encodes look, IMO very good, and I really can not notice much if any difference between 60 and 65% quality. Note, the 24 source dvds are not really high quality.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Re: Colors look horrible when using anamorphic (with log)

Post by johnslayer »

Hi there! Hope this is not considered "thread jacking" but I didn't want to start a new thread because my question seems to be partially explained in this thread ;)
Are there ANY disadvantages to leaving decomb and detelecine on at all times? Even if the content is NOT telecined? I am running the newest snapshot and from what I have read about the newest decomb is that it is pretty safe to leave it on at all times. I am more wondering about detelecine. I have spent the last few hours searching and I still don't quite grasp how I to tell when to use it (other than it visually looks wrong after the encode). From my reading of the detelecine info in the wiki (and I could be reading it wrong) it looks like detelecine only goes into action when it detects the proper pattern of progressive and interlaced frames. So, I am assuming that if the video is NOT telecined it will not find this patter and will do nothing. Correct? A definitive answer would be appreciated. Cheers and thanks for the amazing app!

I've yet to have a problem leaving both detelecine and decomb filters on for all of my encodes.

Great! That is what I was looking for. Does it have any effect on overall encoding time? I know when it finds something to deinterlace/decomb/detelecine it will naturally take longer, but when there is no work for the filters to do encoding times should be the same right? Cheers and thanks for the reply.

It still has to do the detection. Whether this slows down the encode or not is irrelevant - you either need the feature or you don't. Personally, once detelecine+decomb mature, I'm all for forcing them on permanently and removing the ability to configure anything.

I have 0.9.2 installed, and I admit I'm still a little new to this, but for the life of me, I cannot find on the Picture Setting screen a Decomb filter option. Under Filters, I have Detecine and VFR checkboxes, a Deinterlace pull down, a Denoise pulldown and Deblock checkbox. How do I turn on Decomb? Thanks..

After just reading the 0.9.3 snapshots, it would appear that Decomb filter will be a new addition to that yet-in-development release. Is that correct?

Hear hear! That will take all the guessing out of your source material.
