Can HB Work a .vob file with no companion .ifo file?

Post by sitenoise »

I dubbed VHS tape to DVD with Panasonic DMRxxx (a friend's) and the ones that the Panasonic was able to finalize were handled perfectly with HB. However, I got one that didn't get finalized. I used CDRoller (Windows program) to recover the .vob file but that's all I could get. I can't get the .ifo files (don't know why).

The .vob file plays fine in VLC but the time readout goes weird if I skip around the stream.
HB will open the .vob file fine but shows it as being Zero seconds in length and if I go ahead and click Start in HB it finishes in a couple seconds and I have a file with a couple frames, but that's all.

Everywhere I've looked for dealing with .vob files assumes there is an .ifo file with it, which there would be given a successful rip.

Here's the Activity log from the session:

I guess the fact that HB doesn't do its stuff on this .vob file makes my inquiry kind of dumb, but maybe someone reading this has a workaround, some way to create an .ifo, or ... anything.

I tried using Toast to burn a new disc from the .vob and it punts with an I/O error (disc probably copy protected ... which I can't understand, given the source)

If I use VLC to save a stream, it doesn't deinterlace it and it looks like crap. These are old dance performances I want to get up on the YouTube to share with the performers of 25 years ago.

Thanks for any tips,

I'd love an authoritative response of "You are out of luck with no .ifo file" or "HB should be able to handle it, you've probably got bad vob files" so I can stop holding my breath. Doesn't seem like it would take too much effort.

Can HB Work a .vob file with no companion .ifo file? It's a yes or no question fer cryin' out loud ...

I have no idea. Why don't you try one of your successful .vob-files and move the .ifo out of the way?

In general HandBrake accepts vobs since 0.9.0. I'd suggest you try the most recent snapshot.

Damn! So the answer is apparently yes. I grabbed a couple solo vobs off a real DVD and HB reads what appear to be proper time sigs.

I'll add this bit of trivia about the "successful" discs the Panasonic spit out ... There's no Finder access to the files on the disc, so I couldn't check one of those vobs. HB is able to rip and convert from them, however. So it seems that either the Panasonic wrote bad vobs to disc and that's what prevented finalization, or my file recovery tool left me with bad vobs. Either way, damn.

thanks, trondmm, for suggesting what now makes me feel like an idiot for not thinking of in the first place ...
