Movies with long running times

Hi Guys,
Hoping you can help on an issue I'm having with movies that have long running times. I've been happily encoding my movie collection with no issues, however i've now come to a couple of movies that have a running time of about 3 hours (King Kong, BSG Mini Series, both UK PAL) and at the end of the encode Handbrake crashes and leaves me with the Mac crash prompt "Ignore, Send to Apple, Relaunch", etc . The reason i think it's at the end is that the file is about the right size for the length of movie with the settings I'm using:
TV target device, x264, average bitrate 3000, Framerate Same as source (25fps), 2 pass, DPLII & AC3 with the following x264 settings (I know Trellis is not used with Cabac=0, just haven't got round to updating my string)

With those settings the movies are coming out at about 4.3Gb. As mentioned all my other movies, with shorter running times, have encoded fine and play with no issues. I'm not sure if it is anything to do around the 4Gb marker, but i get the same problem with the 64bit check box enabled or not. Quicktime obviously doesn't open the file "The file is not a movie file"
I've been using 0.92 (Intel iMac 24") but have also tried my latest SVN checkout. Below is the Activity Log from the encode i left running last night (i know this is from the unsupported SVN, but the Activity log is the same from 0.92). I'm hoping whatever it mentions at the end may help.

Perhaps I'm jut being unlucky with these 2 discs (fairmount & DTOX to rip), but i don't think i have any other movies of this length on 1 disc. Everything else (LOTR, Gone With The Wind ) are split over 2 discs

Try turning off turbo. If that doesn't work, don't use 2-pass on that disc. In the 1st pass it's not encoding audio and it ends up having to skip 24 frames of the source. When it has the audio, or maybe when the turbo isn't speeding everything up, it can manage to keep everything in sync without skipping frames.

I'm having the same problem on my 20" iMac (the low end version) running 10.5.2, with the same movie (King Kong), only the US version, and I'm using the default AppleTV presets...

I just actually watched it get to 100% on the encoding and then crash

No, you're not. You're not even using 2-pass. So how could you have the "same" problem when that problem was an issue with more frames in the 2nd pass than the 1st?

Use 64-bit MP4 formatting.

In fact, the last poster already *gave* you the solution if you'd bothered reading what he wrote. Then again, maybe that's asking too much from someone who can't be bothered to follow forum rules like "Read the FAQ before posting" (as your problem is covered there as well).

My apologies, I saw the same end symptom (namely the Handbrake GUI crashing at the end of an encode) and assumed the issues were somehow related, despite the fact the original poster was using 2-pass encoding when I was not...

I did read the FAQ before my initial post, but did not make the connection that my crashing and the 4 GB issue listed in the FAQ were related, as encoding in a previous version of Handbrake that did not have AC3 pass-thru seemed to work fine on this same DVD. I incorrectly assumed that the cause of my problem was more insidious than the 4GB file size issue.
