Does more M1 GPU cores improve performance?

Post by whippet0 »

Description of problem or question:

Does Handbrake benefit from having more M1 GPU cores when doing H264 encoding? i.e. would an 8 core GPU be faster than a 7 core GPU? If so, do I need to use the H264 "VideoToolbox" video encoder in order to take advantage of the M1 GPU cores?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.4.0 Beta

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
MacOS Big Sur 11.1

No, the hardware encoder is a separate piece of hardware, GPU cores don't matter.
You have to select H264 "VideoToolbox" to use the hardware encoder.

Thanks. I guess that means the lower end M1 will have the same H264 encoding performance as the higher end M1 with more GPU cores.
