Gopro video converting for imovie not the right size

Post by lumail »

I am trying to convert gopro video to make it more usable in imovie, I have it preset on fast 1080p30, into mp4, it says in dimensions that storage size is 1920 x 1080 but in display size it says 1440 x 1080 and its greyed out so I can't change it. all other settings are the same except that I unchecked "create chapter markers" on the Chapters section. the resulting file is described in Finder as 1440 X 1080 and it will only let me create an imovie in 720p. Any help would be greatly appreciated:

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version 1.3.3:

macOS 10.13 High Sierra:

Code: Select all

That's why.
Your video source reports 4:3 DAR, not 16:9.

Thanks for the reply, I just figured that out! I looked at the dimensions on the info about the video and it says 1920 X 1440. Gah. is there a straightforward way to convert this to 16:9? I don't mind cropping, but I don't know what specific things to put in to the parameters on Handbrake.

You cannot "convert" a 4:3 video aspect to 16:9 without stretching, pillarboxing (black borders), or cropping; the rectangles are different sizes, sorry. It's ordinary math.

Yes, I don't mind cropping. I'm just wondering what the settings for the cropping would be in Handbrake to accomplish this. I'm creating a video using 16:9 iphone footage and hoping to have a 1080p final product.

Use a simple ratio just like you learned in school. I won't do the math for you, and Handbrake probably isn't the best tool. You'll be cropping a lot off the top and bottom, so you actually might "mind".
There is absolutely nothing wrong with including a pillarboxed segment in your widescreen video. It is abundantly common in broadcast, and that's what I recommend.

Ha ha, school was a loooooooong time ago! and, for the purposes of this video, I totally don't "mind". I just need it to match the other footage I shot in 16:9. That's why the pillarboxing won't work, its providing another angle of the same thing, so it would look weird if its suddenly pillarboxed. I think I may have, fingers crossed, figured it out. I went into the crop section and used the top and bottom parameters equally until the "display" readout was 1920. If anyone is curious, its 185. its loading into iMovie well, and I tried to export a video with bits of both video, the one from the iphone and the cropped gopro and it worked. so hopefully the big project will work as well.

Good luck. I still suggest an NLE for what you are trying to do. Handbrake is limited. Resolve is free.

Great, thanks, I'll check out Resolve. I'm trying to expand my knowledge base around this stuff. For example, no idea what an NLE is. The math might have to wait.

Non Linear Editor.
Handbrake is an encoder mostly.

The math is not that hard. The original video is 1920x1440, you want 1920x1080. Since our horizontal pixel count is the same, You just need less vertical pixels. 360 to be exact. 1440-1080. But we need to crop to the middle I assume. So 360/2 is 180. So crop 180 pixels from the top and 180 from the bottom. Boom 16:9.
Or you could just use iMovie or resolve to crop frame as well.
