Help with x264 enccoding for Bl-ray authoring

Post by Phaedra »

I'm hoping to use Handbrake to produce the highest possible quality x264 encoded files for import into Blu-ray authoring software.

I have found some x264 encode profiles online, but I am unable to match the settings when the video has been output from handbrake:
cabac=1 / ref=4 / deblock=0:-1:-1 / analyse=0x3:0x133 / me=umh / subme=10 / psy=1 / psy_rd=1.00:0.15 / mixed_ref=1 / me_range=24 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=2 / 8x8dct=1 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / fast_pskip=1 / chroma_qp_offset=-3 / threads=34 / lookahead_threads=2 / sliced_threads=0 / slices=4 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / interlaced=0 / bluray_compat=1 / constrained_intra=0 / bframes=3 / b_pyramid=1 / b_adapt=2 / b_bias=0 / direct=3 / weightb=1 / open_gop=1 / weightp=1 / keyint=24 / keyint_min=1 / scenecut=40 / intra_refresh=0 / rc_lookahead=24 / rc=abr / mbtree=0 / bitrate=35000 / ratetol=1.0 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=0 / qpmax=69 / qpstep=4 / vbv_maxrate=38000 / vbv_bufsize=30000 / nal_hrd=vbr / filler=0 / ip_ratio=1.40 / pb_ratio=1.30 / aq=1:0.20
When setting cabac=1, the encoded file is cabac=0, for example.
And setting ref=4, the encoded file shows ref=2

Any suggestions? I guess Handbrake is using a few default settings somewhere?

Can anyone suggest the settings I should be using for feature films, i.e. shot on film, 1920 x 1980.

HandBrake version 1.3.3

Mac OS 10.1.4.6 (Mojave)

A search for "bluray authoring" finds a lot of messages on this forum, many explaining that handbrake wasn't intended to generate BD-spec h264 video, and that different BD authoring tools have different requirements.

Thanks woodstock - can you suggest an alternate way of encoding x264 for Blu-ray?

Not from personal experience. I avoid writing optical disks in general, let alone ones that are intended for playback in consumer hardware.

But there are people involved in the other topics that master disks on a regular basis, including for pressing. Their advice holds a lot more weight than mine ever could.

I still actually release movies on Blu-ray, Blu-ray is very much an in-demand product :)

What front end do I need for x264, or do I need to run it via the command line?

x264cli can produce Bluray-compatible output.

That's what I'm trying to figure out how to encode with.

Looks like the easiest option is via MeGUI on a PC.

You have your list of options above, just put them into the x264cli.

If you import x264 to BluRay authoring software, it will re-encode it to match its own requirements.
It will not smart render to BDAV/BDMV format (M@TS), at least I have seen no examples.

Well, some authoring software will ingest raw H.264 from x264 without re-encoding if you use the settings outlined there: http://www.x264bluray.com

A raw bitstream is required though, so it rules out HandBrake.

I wonder what consumer authoring programs proactively support x264 without recompression, having looked through that article.
There is a broad disclaimer but no actual list, and my previous tries have been fruitless.

No idea, those articles were really meant to target professional authoring software.

If I'm reading correctly, TMPGENC will encode x264, but it is not mentioned for smart rendering or BD authoring.

While reading up on TMPGENC, which seemed a likely candidate, it appears they've turned their attention to developing the PGMX file format, which is boasting Menus, Slideshows, etc.

So does anybody know how to encode for Blu-ray? There's little information about exactly how this all works.
