Videos freeze playing 5.1 track on apple TV

Description of problem or question:
My videos freeze and crash when playing on apple TV IF i try to select the 5.1 audio stream...
Apple TV 4k - latest software

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
Encoding Blu-rays with make mkv then handbrake using a modified 1080p preset. Everything is fine, and the videos play fine, until i try to elect the 5.1 track. Picture freezes, becomes unresponsive. Is it because I'm coding using AAC? Have also tried Ac3 and it then plays the 5.1 by default, but then freezes when i switch to 2 channel so still not right! Also the videos seem to play with various tracks selected via the Mac TV app ()although i don't have 5.1 speakers attached to check the sound.

What if you do one 2ch AAC track and one 5.1 track (either codec)? I'd start there and add complexity if it works.

Thanks... it does seem like some of the tracks are duplicated.

I’ve got a playable version by using Dolby surround as the mix down using AAC as the codec. Not sure the mix sounds quite right though...

So i also tried DTS passthru, but then i just get a missing track. I'm checking the files on subler to see what the output is. iso 4 tracks becomes 3, with the missing track skipped and the 2nd track showing as 5.1 and playing as 5.1 but when i look it's only 2 channels, so i think apple tv is just sending those 2 tracks through all speakers. Something about it seems to be flagging surround though ,, weird. I'm sure it's not true 5.1 though, whatever is happening
It's annoying because I've ripped DVDs and blu rays in the past and seemingly encoded them to 5.1 (6) channel AC3. I have no idea why this won't work.
t o be clear, when playing the 5.1 track the while stream locks up and becomes unplayable. It pauses, can't be unpaused (or takes ages) and the only way out is long menu press. Sometime sit even drops sharing connection with my mac and i have to restart everything to 'see' the media drive in apple TV.

I'm using 1.4 beta, so maybe I'll go to 1.3.3 and see if that helps.

The encode that worked kind-of was the one where i set the 5.1 DTS track to be passthru. I used Media Info to check that file and there are 4 streams there, including a DTS 5.1 stream. So it's there and when i play the video it seems to play a 5.1 soundtrack as i can hear effects and music through rear speakers. However when i look at the audio options only 3 streams are showing, the middle one being the allegedly 5.1 track and the one I'm listening to. It seem it's ignoring a track, maybe the DTS one, maybe not. Very confusing!

Sorry to go on, but any help would be appreciated. Should i use passthru for DTS? I know apple tv doesn't support it, but understand its transcoded. Shouldn't tit just work for me to use either AAC or AC3 for the surround track and set to 5.1? Pretty sure this has worked in the past as i have those past videos that seem to work..

Yeah it's definitely ignoring the DTS passthrough stream and playing the AAC stereo track as if it's 5.1!!??

So i think this is a feature of how I've got my sonos soundbar set up to play stereo. I noticed it on other stereo tracks. I've also now established that its the same issue with handbrake 1.3.3.

Back to square one. I seem unable to transcode the DTS HD 5.1 channel track in a way my apple tv is happy to play. Seems DTS passthrough is not the answer. Plus I looked at some of my old encodes and not sure they are not suffering from the same issue.

I have a similar problem.

Since the 13th of December. My AppleTV is unable to play 5.1 Handbreak encoded files, it is 2.0 PCM only whatever I do or change into the settings.

Auto Selected, it works fine but PCM 2.0 only is sent
Dolby Digital 5.1 selected, PCM 2.0 only is sent and when paused or FFW or RW, the ATV freezes or takes much too long time. Long Menu push to go back to the menu.

I now use Plex and it runs flawlessly 5.1 with those very same files encoded with handbreak ... very stange.
