.srt files not importing properly

Post by Tingri »

Description of problem or question:
I sometimes download a YouTube video with its associated .srt file. I then use Handbrake to merge the files, not burn the subtitles permanently. In the past this worked perfectly. Recently the resulting video will display multiple subtitles simultaneously. Some will be duplicates and all will remain displayed until the screen is full of subtitled dialog. New subtitles merely push the oldest off the screen. The result makes the video impossible to view. It's as if the .srt's time stamps are being ignored.

I tried restarting my Mac and completely deleting all Handbrake files via AppCleaner. I then downloaded a fresh copy of Handbrake and installed. Afterwards, I processed another video and its .srt file and the issue continued.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
1. Open the source file.
2. Click "Tracks" drop-down menu and select "Add External Subtitles Track…"
3. In the resulting dialog box, select the desired .srt file.
4. Click the Start button.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
Ver. 1.3.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Mac OS 10.14.6

HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log)

The instructions didn't perfectly match what I have. There were two log files in the area so I included both.

Re: .srt files not importing properly

Post by Woodstock »

If you play back older videos you've encoded, does this also happen? It could be that your player is having issues.

Do the recent SRT files have proper durations specified? Handbrake is "passing them through" to the MP4 file after translating them to Timed Text format (SRT isn't an MP4-legal format), so if they've changed on the source side, that would be a problem. If you make the output file an MKV, then they will really be passed through unchanged, so you could see if the player is the problem.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

The problem continues. When playing older movies that Handbrake inserted the srt files, they play fine. It's only in the past year that this problem developed after installing a Handbrake update.

Below is the most recent short movie I attempted to process. As can be seen, subtitles don't transition to the next. Instead, they pile up. In this example, they double-up, somenthat sometimes also happens.

This is incredibly frustrating. I've previously used Handbrake and have been very pleased but this issue is a pain.

If you target an MKV destination, do the subtitles continue to "pile up"? Do you have an example of the SRT file you can post?
