16:9 DVDs all being converted as 4:3

Post by keoladonaghy »

Description of problem or question:

I have a collection of DVDs, old, new, commercial and one's I've burned myself, and when I try to convert to MP4, I cannot change the ratio, set crop to manual. I can see that HB appears to be reading the source as 720x480 when it is not, and is cropping the video. This is my first use of 1.3.x, been a few years since I used HB for anything, actually.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Tried multiple DVDs, commercial or otherwise, every one of them comes out 4:3. I've also tried selecting the DVD icon itself, have also selected the Video_TS folder and individual VOB files. They always convert to 4:3.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.3.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Mac OS 10.6.8

Re: 16:9 DVDs all being converted as 4:3

Post by Woodstock »

DVD video comes in two flavors, neither of which is 16:9. There are settings that can allow playback to appear to be 16:9, but the raw video is 4:3 for NTSC disks.

What handbrake is detecting is 4:3 video, and a pixel aspect ratio (PAR) of 8:9. To display as 16:9, the PAR would be different, OR handbrake would be trying to crop off letterbox bars top and bottom.

Nope, it's 3:2.

That made me laugh. DVDs and their non square pixels.
But to the original poster. Handbrake encodes at the original resolution of the source and then adds a tag to tell players to either stretch the video out to 4:3 or 16:9. Hand brake keeps the full resolution of the video. It just so happens that DVDs don't use square pixels when played back, but rectangle.

What I want to know is how you got HandBrake 1.3.1 working on Snow Leopard.

Mahalo (thanks) for all of the responses. What is strange is that I had previously ripped most of these DVDS, had them on an external HD that went bad, so I'm recreating. When I previously ripped them with and older version of Handbrake years ago, they all played back fine with the same aspect ratio as the DVD. With the new files it is not. Playback is through Roku's media player, same as I used previously. The only difference is that they used to be on an HD and now on a jump drive. Also, when I played back the couple of older files I still had backed up, they played back at 16:9 on QuickTime Player. I re-ripped it with this new Handbrake, and it's at 4:3 in QTP. Very strange.

You folks clearly know more about this than I do so I'll continue to dig and try other options. If any others have ideas let me know. Thank you all!

I downloaded it and it ran. Nothing special. Actually, I do recall it prompting me to download a particular library when I tried to run it the first time, but don't recall what it was. Sorry.

Maybe your old rips didn’t use the aspect ratio tag and are stored in the proper aspect ratio. Old version of handbrake, long ago, did this. Basically using square pixels.
I’m guessing your Ruko player is not honoring the aspect ratio tags. I have a first gen smart tv that doesn’t honor the tag so my videos made from DVD’s play on in an 3:2 aspect.

HandBrake has had anamorphic support for at least 12 years…

So is there any setting or something that can get Handbrake (or something else) to add this tag and force the video player or whatever to display it at 16:9?

The tag is automatically added if you just use any of handbrakes general setting. It’s up to the player to honor them. Pretty much any player I’ve had honors them. Xbox, appletv, ps4, quicktime, VLC, A raspberry pi with KODi.... ect... ect.... only one player that I have that does not is my semi smart LG tv from around 2014. But I don’t use that for playback anyway.
