Handbrake stuck on frame during conversion

Post by ssaylor »

I am using kmttg to convert .Tivo video files to .ts files which I then convert to .mp4 with Handbrake. I have converted numerous videos successfully but Handbrake is extending the latest .mp4 video I’m converting from 2 hrs. to 7 hrs. I can play the 2 hr. .ts video successfully in VLC but when I open the Handbrake converted .mp4 video, I find about 5 additional hours of a stuck frame. Has anyone experienced this before?

Latest Handbrake version on Catalina.

I’ll add the logs after the job finishes. (I’m repeating the entire process).

Re: Handbrake stuck on frame during conversion

Post by ssaylor »

I was able to determine the video hangs and starts repeating the same frame at 1:11:17 and then starts encoding normally again at 6:19:49 sec. Also worthy of mention is the Audio track goes away - an never returns for the duration of the movie.

I have rerecorded the video, reconverted the .TiVo to .ts with kmttg, recoded the file with Handbrake to .mp4 and it always comes up with the same thing. Again, I can play the video.ts file normally in VLC and it plays normally with a correct length of 2 hrs. so this is definitely a Handbrake issue.

I'll try another preset to see it this helps but in the meantime,

Yeah, it's something weird with the input, we need to wait for someone more familiar with our transport stream demuxer to comment.

Run it through VideoReDo's Quick Stream Fix. Better at handling recoverable TS issues than HB is.

No Mac version?

I just pulled a copy of Sunday Morning, it encoded in Handbrake as expected and plays perfectly in VLC so it's definitely something in the Christmas Story video.

Yea, it's errors in the recorded stream. They're allowable but HB doesn't do great with them.

Sorry, VideoRedo is for Windows, you might try Subler but I have no experience.

Point of information -- all broadcast recordings contain stream errors. They are wrapped as transport streams, and will usually play just fine. Decoding for editing is a different story. Very few errors can be tolerated, as they must have intact GOPs to decode properly. Just rewrapping them as program streams does nothing. Sometimes only dropping frames and re-assigning i-frames will work. VideoRedo for Windows is very good at this, but in bad cases, GIGO ultimately wins.
