No Subtitles on mp4s I created with Hankbrake

Post by stu_m »

Description of problem or question:

Hello Handbrake community,

From a blu ray dvd I used Makemkv to produce a folder with a large bmvd file, along with an AACS folder, Certificate folder, and discatt.dat. Then I used Handbrake to make and mp4 of that large file for personal viewing on a new XS iphone.

All of the audio languages I want made it onto the mp4, but none of the subtitles. I tried it several times and can’t get the subs for some reason.

I am using Mac Blu-ray Player version 2.17.2.2614, and the subs are available when I play the blu ray discs, as well as when when I use the player to play the large Makemkv file I created.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.2.2 (2019022300)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

El Capitan 10.11

PGS subtitles cannot be put into an MP4 file; They can only be burned in.

If you want switchable subtitles, you'll have to output MKV files.

Thank you Woodstock. Will I use Handbrake to do that? And what kind of file size will be produced?

To create an MKV file instead of an MP4, select MKV from the Format: pulldown on the summary page. That will open up the options as far as audio and subtitle codecs that can be included.

The downside is that not all playback software and devices support MKV files. You cannot play them on Apple devices with Apple software, because Apple excludes MKV support. You WILL need a third-party player, but they're available for just about everything Apple sells.

Okay thanks again. I found the MKV option, and the Handbrake job is underway. Below is from the now-running summary page:

Title 99 - 00:58:20 - 00807.MPLS
Preset: Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround (Modified)

H.265 (x265), 60 FPS PFR
AC3 Passthru
AC3 Passthru
+ 5 additional audio tracks
Foreign Audio Search
0: English [PGS]
+ 4 additional subtitles tracks
Chapter Markers

Filters: Comb Detect, Decomb
Size: 1920x1080 Storage, 1920x1080 Display

I hope that's all alright, or even optimal I chose the Preset under "Devices" for the iphone I'm gonna get to get today or tomorrow. I wonder if it is overkill. (I'm also probably gonna get a tablet of some kind capable of 4k at some point). I chose AC3 Passthru whenever I could, as recommended on a thread in the Handbrake forum.

As far as 3rd party software, I am a fan of VLC. Any other suggestions?

Yes...Success! I tried several of the audio and subtitle tracks, all working with VLC on Macbook Pro. To be soon transferred to new iphone. Thank you woodstock. I have other issues and questions, but I'll post a new thread, to keep things separated.

I use VLC on computers. It has its limitations and bugs, but it's useful enough for me.

Have tried several times to figure out Kodi; lots of people rave about it, but I think it's because they lost their minds, and raving is all they have left. Apparently it's very easy to use if you're trying to play a pirate video via bittorrent, but trying to get it to play LAN-hosted video requires plug-ins and magical incantations that I haven't found. And getting it to allow both VOB and PGS subtitle streams to work is theoretically possible - I've seen websites that say so - but I have never actually SEEN it work.

Hi all,

Please excuse my ignorance...

If I read the above correctly, PBS subtitles cannot be stored in an .mp4 container. OK.

I have a .mp4 files with (according to MediaInfo) "Timed Text (sbtl) in them. Is it possible for Handbrake to convert "DVB subtitles" to "Timed text (sbtl)" when converting MPEG-TS in a .ts file to .mp4? I have been unable to make it work, but is it possible?

thanks,
James.

The problem with PGS subtitles is that they are graphic images; Timed Text is text only.

To convert from PGS to any text format, you need to use tools that will examine the image, attempt to recognize the characters found there, and write a text file. This is deliberately not part of handbrake for several reasons.

The big one being, Optical Character Recognition is not an exact science yet, and they've been working on it for decades. PGS subtitle images present an almost ideal recognition environment... a clean source picture. And yet, accuracy is still just "upper 90's" percentage. For those who really care about this sort of thing, they'll use one of the subtitle OCR tools that exist, then examine the generated SRT file and make corrections. The result is still going to be crude; SRT subtitles are only slightly more advanced than Closed Captioning.

Who do you complain to when OCR isn't good enough? The authors of the program, not the authors of the library that did the (alleged inadequate) work. We don't need the handbrake developers wasting time on things they aren't experts in.

If you have playback tools that understand MKV files, the problem of an aged, inadequate packaging standard disappears.

Thanks for tour quick answer!

I wrote at the beginning "please excuse my ignorance"- I did not know that DVB Subtitles were graphic images.

I don't know what PGS means and what its relationship is to DVB subtitles. I have been googling that acronym since reading your answer.

I get your point about OCR although the text looks pretty clean so I am surprised to hear that OCR is only at 90%. Many scanning apps simply call a dedicated external OCR module; for example mine uses ABBYY which has excellent accuracy.

"Upper 90's" in this case usually means around 98% or so. I've seen OCR software do "better than 99%", but nothing that does 100% with any complex text. This is especially true when the source material uses slang that isn't in the OCR software's dictionary. For example, the Japanese word "otaku", if it appears in English text, might be "corrected" to "outtake", even if the OCR software clearly saw and decoded the correct letters.

Some DVDs and Bluray disks do include text-based subtitles. Other than Closed Captioning in the video stream, it is rare, though. DVDs typically use "VOBSUB" subtitles, and BDs use "PGS", both of which are pictures, not text. Technically, neither is supported in MP4, but there is a popular (but unofficial) extension to MP4 to allow VOBSUB subtitles to work in some players. Apple's programs may or may not, depending on the program.

No such extension exists for PGS subtitles, though.

Yes, good point - I hadn't thought of that.
