Muffled Audio only on one Mac mini but play fine elsewhere

Post by wb9tpg »

Description of problem or question:

I have some mp4 files supplied to me to play for a weekly event and am having trouble playing them on a Mac Mini connected to the sound board. The audio sounds MUFFLED on this one machine and they play fine on every other machine I tried. This unit is connected to our sound board and video projector. The video's are created by Handbrake from a video camera source and handbrake output is

H.264, 720 x 480 (530 x 480) AAC, 48000Hz, Stereo (L R)
FPS: 29.97

Other Videos including AAC encoded MP4 files play successfully on this unit and it only fails with files from this source but those files work elsewhere.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Only produces muffled audio on one computer (Mac mini). It's muffled playing it online in Safari. After downloading it's muffled playing it with QuickTime or VLC.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.2.1 but I'm not sure what version the person encoded the video with.

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Mac mini (not sure version of OS). plays on other windows and MacBooks.

If you pass through the audio do you get the same issue?

I'm just got an original file from the person who recorded it and will try to transcode it and play it myself to eliminate some variables. Will probably be next Monday before I get the opportunity. I'm not sure what you mean by 'pass through'?

On the audio page, you can select whether to "convert" between codecs, or "passthru" audio sources to the output file. Since you have AAC on the source, and you want AAC on the output file, you can just "passthru". On the audio tab, next to where it says "Codec" next to the source, click on the pull-down and select "Auto Passthru".

I thought I'd post what I found. There were 2 defects:

1. The Audio they encoded as Stereo only included sound on the Left side.
2. The main amp in the sound system has a blown Left Channel and everything through that side is muffled.

Normal videos sounded OK as we heard them out of the Right side that was working.

So I'm replacing the amp and I told them to select "Mono" when encoding their video.

The two defects together had me chasing my tail.
