First subtitle disappears

Description of problem or question:
I'm trying to add burned in .srt subtites to an mp4 iMovie (10.1.10) file using Handbrake, and every time the first subtitle doesn't appear. They don't start at the beginning of the movie, but about 8 seconds in. I've tried a lot of different fixes, splitting the clip, moving the first subtitle later, putting in a blank subtitle before it, etc.

The first subtitle has a duration of "less than or equal to zero milliseconds", so it would not be rendered. How long it it supposed to be displayed?

This can also happen if your subtitle file is actually Unicode (e.g. UTF-8) with a Byte Order Mark and you select a non-Unicode charset in the drop-down…

Yeah, the log does show that ISO-8859-1 was the selected character set...

The first one that is super short was my attempt at a work around, where I put a blank subtitle in to see if that would disappear and let the first subtitle show, but it didn't work. The work around did work when I put text in, so this is the file where I was able to put in text I didn't care about in the first line that disappeared, then the second line appeared as the first:

Are you editing the SRT file on the Mac? If so, you should select "UTF-8" as the character set for the SRT file; Macs, by default, use UTF-8 for text files, especially if they have the Byte Order Mark Rodeo mentions. You won't see the BOM in the editor - but it is there in the text, and will cause issues if you aren't expecting UTF-8.

I've run in to this for years - I used to help out on a support forum where files that were originally ISO-8859 variants would "suddenly" grow BOMs and stop working, just because the user opened them up to look at them, and used "save/exit" instead of "close", and then their systems stopped working. But they couldn't see the BOMs... the editor made sure to hide them (as it should!), it would just say the file was UTF-8 instead of ISO-8859-1.
