Should VLC be installed before Handbrake?

a) Should VLC be installed before Handbrake?
b) Do I even need VLC to use Handbrake?
c) If I install VLC afterwards will Handbrake work like VLC was installed before Handbrake?
HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0): Handbrake 1.1.2 (2018090500)
Operating system and version: macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra
