Question about converting Blu Ray ISO

This was my first time trying to convert a Bluray ISO with Handbrake. I ripped a Bluray ISO using terminal and it played correctly in the Mac Blu Ray Player app but Handbrake said no valid source when I tried to load it up. I was able to convert the Blu Ray directly using handbrake though. Is this typical? Like is there something I may be missing then I rip the ISO regarding the protection or something? I also found that it wouldn't work in VLC either but the bluray did. Normally I would assume there was an issue with the ISO but since Mac Blu Ray player played it correctly I'm not so sure.

Handbrake does not deal with encrypted sources on its own. Your player can decrypt the video.

The recommendation is to remove the encryption with tools designed to do that. I use MakeMKV, but it isn't the only one. With actual ripping software, you do not have to go through "make an ISO".

I use the libraries from MakeMKV with handbrake. That's why I was able to convert directly from the Blu Ray itself with handbrake. I'm just curious why the ISO wouldn't convert because technically the ISO should be the exact same as the physical disc.

IIRC the library HB uses for BR handling doesn't support ISOs like the one it uses for DVD handling does.
If you really want to do it this way, mount the ISO with something else and point HB to it like it's a disk.

But you're better off using a purpose built ripper to get a video file than asking HB to deal with disk structures.
