Problems enconding captions on portrait / vertical video

Description of problem or question:
Hi there, I'm trying to create a portrait / vertical video for use on social media and want to use Handbrake to hard code the captions on the video.
When I ran the encode, the captions are visible but appear stretched and over about half of the video pane.
Any guidance on how to adjust the encode process to produce non-stretched text is much appreciated as I haven't been able to find an alternative workaround.
Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
Version 1.1.1.
Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Mac OS 10.13.6 High Sierra
