Incorrect movie duration in Handbrake when converting Mov files edited in Quicktime Pro

Post by alainbriot »

Description of problem or question:
I am converting Mov files edited in Quicktime Pro to mp4. When I convert the mov files Handbrake does not read the correct movie duration. For the movie with the attached log, the duration of the movie in Quictime is 18'23" Handbrake reads the duration as 18'30" and converts the movie to that length. The problem is that the audio no longer coincides with the video. The audio is off by 7" since it is still 18'23" long while the video is longer.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
I can send you the file if you want.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.1.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Mac Pro running Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6

A complete encode log would need to be provided to determine the cause.

Post by Woodstock »

From what I can find about the MOV file format, the duration that handbrake is displaying comes from the source file:
Duration: 00:18:30.63, start: 0.160000, bitrate: 2037 kb/s
And handbrake calculates how many frames it should expect:
[19:19:05] sync: expecting 30803 video frames
Later, it reports that it was three frames short of that calculated value:
[19:21:47] sync: got 30800 frames, 30803 expected
But three frames were dropped because the video had some inconsistent time stamps.

Are you sure that QTP accurately reported the duration of the video?

I don't know if QTP reported the correct length.

Is there a way to compensate or fix the incorect length in Handbrake?

HandBrake 1.1.1 and previous versions don’t support mov edit lists. You should try a nightly build of HandBrake, it should be a bit better.

Thank you. I downloaded the Nightly built. Now having this new buit, what do I do to make the audio and video the same length?

Just try converting your video.

I tried converting a video (with the nightly built) that had a different duration for video and sound. The duration was fixed however the audio is now garbled at several points during the video making it unusable. So the problem is 'fixed' but a new problem is now present, which is just as problematic, actually more problematic since the audio is no longer acceptable.

Re: Incorrect movie duration in Handbrake when converting Mov files edited in Quicktime Pro

Post by Woodstock »

There seem to be a LOT of frame time stamp issues for both audio and video in this source. Was the original an over-the-air recording?

I tested it myself, the nightly build needs some fixing :|

What is an 'over the air recording' ? The original is a computer monitor recording of photoshop processing steps. This recording was edited in Quicktime Pro.

"Over the air recordings" refers to video streams recorded from broadcast sources. They are usually full of redundant frames, to deal with errors in transmission, and they are full of frame time stamps that jump backwards like your source has. Such streams need to be "cleaned up" to correct the time jumps, and there are programs that specialize in that.

But Ritsuka knows a lot more about this than I possibly could.

Thank you for the explanation. Can you give me the names of programs that can clean up time jumps?

I only know of one for Windows, VideoRedo, which has a free trial. It's not something I encounter often, so I haven't gone searching for other programs.

Thank you. I have a different question. What is the best preset for converting a movie to play well on Windows 10? Right now the videos I converted from Handbrake are choppy on windows and the slider motion bar in the player is not working.
