How to shrink the file size but not loose the quality?

Post by DocDoc37 »

Does anyone have a preset that will drop the file size of a BR ripped to a more manageable size without loosing quality?

Obviously you have to lose some quality.

Try one of the HQ presets and see if it works for you.

There is always a compromise between image quality, file size and compression speed. If you want excellent quality then you will get a large file size. If you want a small file size then you get reduced quality.

What you could do is to perform a test: process the same exact disc using each of these Presets: Super HQ; then at HQ; then at Fast; and finally at Very Fast

Look at the playback quality of each one and note its file size. Choose the one whose quality you can live with yet gives you the smallest file size. Depending on what device you are watching the video on, you might get away with a lot of compression (smallest file size) but if yo ware watching the video on a large high quality HDTV set then you might have to settle for a larger file size to get more acceptable image quality.

The documentation has some pointers on quality: https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/work ... ality.html

As others note, any of the general 1080p presets should compress BD sources more than the originals, even while retaining visual quality.
