Forced Subtitles

Post by microhrd » Fri May 25, 2018 11:27 am

While newer systems can play MKVs, I got into the habit of encoding all of my videos into MP4s since they can be played on virtually any format or system. It's when I have an English movie with occasional foreign dialogue that I run into problems.

The MKV file clearly has this forced subtitle track already present, since the English subtitles appear during the foreign dialogue, but when I click on "Foreign Audio Search", "Forced" and "Burned In" under the "Subtitles" tab, they do not appear in the Handbrake-generated MP4.

If I'm able to find an "srt" subtitle file and add that, Handbrake will not allow me to check "Forced" under Subtitles and the problem still remains.

Has anyone come across a viable solution for this?

I'm running Handbrake 1.1.0 on OSX High Sierra 10.13.4

Re: Forced Subtitles

Forced subtitles is a vague concept in the minds of people who author disks and SRT files. While you can tag subtitles within a track as being "forced", few do it; the usual method is to provide a separate track that contains "just" the forced subtitles. SRT files and ASS tracks usually assume you're dealing with an original, non-dubbed title, and will need all the subtitles.

Foreign Audio Search looks for the flags, OR a subtitle track that has only 10% or fewer subtitles compared to others, if there are no forced flags. If you're not using FAS, the "Forced only" selection ONLY looks for the flag... and I have not seen many titles (other than Avatar) that actually use the forced flag.

It gets even more random when dealing with downloaded video like your example - you have no idea what the person who uploaded the file did to it before you got it. But, again, separate subtitle tracks are going to assume non-dubbed video, and include everything.
