Audio passthru option missing

Post by MrGC »

Description of problem or question:

Older versions of Handbrake allowed auto passthru of "aac_latm" soundtrack on EyeTV recordings but this isn't available (as far as I can see) in version 1.0 and newer.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

N/A

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.0 and above

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

OS/X 10.13.4, but earlier releases too.

HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log)

Code: Select all

Log not available - this is a pre-encoding setting that is no longer available.

There are no changes in the passthru options. Sac was never supported as a passthru options. Are you sure it's not AAC?

My bad - mis-typed it! Have just corrected the post. The EyeTV recordings show as having aac_latm audio and earlier releases of Handbrake allowed it to be passed through. I always like to preserve the original audio but am currently using an old release to enable me to do this.

Can you also post your logs of a successful and unsuccessful encode.

Hi,

I never get a successful encode with passthru on the latest versions of Handbrake. Only the older releases allow passthru of this audio format. Would you like me to send a log for a successful encode from an older version of Handbrake? On the current release, there's no option to allow passthru with this audio format. Other input sources allow passthru.

Ah, maybe passthru doesn't work on older versions after all?

Code: Select all

[19:57:28] Auto Passthru: allowed codecs are AAC, AC3, DTS, DTS-HD, MP3
[19:57:28] Auto Passthru: fallback is AC3 (ffmpeg)
[19:57:28] Auto Passthru: passthru not possible for track 1, using fallback
...
[19:57:28] + decoder: English (LATM AAC) (2.0 ch) (track 1, id 0x19ca)
[19:57:28] + mixdown: Stereo
[19:57:28] + encoder: AC3 (ffmpeg)
Looks like it used a fallback encoder. And not a good one at that.

I'd always assumed that it was doing passthru as there were no warnings in the older versions. So... the newer releases are explicitly showing that passthru is not possible by not listing it as an option? Makes sense.

Which encoder would you suggest is best, when passthru is not possible, please?
