For no obvious reason when I access the PREVIEW window after opening a source file - Handbrake cashes. Can't explain it - it has been working fully for years and has just started doing this.
Mac High Sierra 10.13.4

Any ideas?

I think I have just sorted this - upgraded to HandBrake 1.1.0.

Sorry for the trouble, this is a known issue with earlier versions of HandBrake and macOS 10.13.4. Sounds like you found the fix on your own.
