DVDs that have Dolby Digital logo on DVD face but no 5.1 selection in audio
I have some educational DVDs that have the Dolby Digital logo on the DVD face, but I don't give me the option of selecting 5.1 in HB. When I choose the HQ preset it just shows AAC (CoreAudio) on one line and AC3 Passthru. No 5.1 selection. It was my understanding that a disc that has Dolby Digital means that it was sourced in surround sound. Am I wrong here?

mduell,
I am asking a general question about terminology with regards to encoding in relation to HB. How would an Activity Log be relevant unless you are simply creating roadblocks to drive me from posting questions? I can post an Activity Log, but I don't see how this would be helpful to answering my question.

Activity log would tell us what handbrake saw when it looked at your source disk.
Right now, we have only a description of what the box said.

The log confirms your source DVD does indeed have Dolby Digital audio, in the form of 2.0ch AC3. This fully conforms to the Dolby Digital specification, as indicated on the box.

It also appears that your source doesn't actually have a 5.1 channel track to begin with.
DD and DPL2 are not 5.1 channel. although it's usually accompanied by a 5.1 channel track on most modern features.

Thanks for your reply. Is the quality better for having a DVD sourced in Dolby Digital audio even if its just 2 channel stereo? I always associated Dolby Digital with surround sound or 5.1 so this is something new I learned.

Except for uncompressed PCM and DTS, Dolby Digital AC3 is the best native audio format compatible with DVD video. It can deliver from 1 to 6 (5.1) channels up to 448 Kbps at 48/16.

Re: DVDs that have Dolby Digital logo on DVD face but no 5.1 selection in audio
Can anyone let me know why there are two audio tracks encoded if the sourced in Dolby Digital 2 channel? Under the Audio tab, there is one track with the AAC (Core Audio) codec and below that another track with AC3 Passthru. Both are 2 channel, although the mixdown tab for AC3 Passthru is defaulted to None and cannot be changed, while AAC codec is selected by default to stereo.

That's the configuration in the preset you selected.
You can't change the mixdown in a passthrough stream for obvious reasons, and it doesn't make sense to change it on the AAC track.
