First line of subtitle file not being 'burned in'

Hi, I've been using Handbrake for a while with no issues but now whenever I try to burn in a subtitle track, it never adds the first line of the SRT file. I've checked this for two separate video and SRT files, both with a repeating problem

Looks like the first subtitle isn't valid - it starts at zero and runs for a negative amount of time.

You would have to edit the SRT file and correct the times. I cannot help with that - I do not usually deal with SRT subtitles.

If you decide to edit the file, make sure your text editor can handle the character set used by the file. UTF-8 editors are more common nowadays than they used to be, but not all text editors recognize UTF-8 and save in UTF-8 without being TOLD to do that.

The subtitle file seems to be working OK when watching the video file in VLC (VLC recognises the SRT file and it includes the very first line).

However when I try to burn them into handbrake, the first line doesn't show.

So it doesn't seem to be an issue with the actual file given that it works on VLC?

No such issue here, first packet ("Getting the attention of doctors") is rendered just fine, and I don't have the zero-duration packet error in the log either…

Also, the following line in your log is weird:

…for the provided file, it should be:

[21:51:33] sync: first pts subtitle 0xff is 113400

…and generally speaking, almost no subtitle track is ever going to start at PTS 0 (the very first millisecond of the file).

I didn't edit the file… download both files as a ZIP, unzipped and went straight to encoding in HandBrake.

Ok there were two videos. MEDlexa seems to be working OK now, but Voice Express Connect is not. The first line of the video does not show after using Handbrake.

Reproduced. It seems we may be tripping on the byte order mark -- not sure how to fix it yet.

ISO-8859-1 doesn't have a byte order mark. The mark in the file is ef bb bf which corresponds to UTF8. You're using the wrong charset setting when specifing the HandBrake srt file settings.

We should really do a quick read of the initial characters of the file and auto-select the charset if it can be identified by byte order marks. Yet another thing to add to my todo list.
