Slow HD Encode on 2016 MacBook Pro

Post by tysonrooster »

Description of problem or question
Transcoding HD Apple Pro Ress 422 and HQ files into mp4s. This however has been going very slow on an otherwise fast machine. Average fps is currently 22. So its taking in slower than real time to encode. System at work is HDD and runs faster than this SSD.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable)

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0)
1.0.7

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.3 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update)
macOS High Sierra

Error message text or screenshot (If Applicable)

Encoding takes time, can you post a log from your other machine so we can see why there’s a difference.

You can pick up a few percentage points by eliminating unnecessary filters. Given your source in this case, you can PROBABLY disable decomb and get 0.5-1 fps more out of the encode.

But, does the fps start out high, then drop off? With any laptop, I suspect thermal limits on prolonged speed tests, as the system protects the processor.

If the system at work has a faster CPU, it will be faster. The SSD doesn't help HandBrake.
