handbrake encountered a read error:
error: avio_open2 failed, errno -13
Assuming the disk really is not encrypted, you should be able to copy its contents to a local directory using Finder. Try doing so; do you get any errors?

No errors reported. The disc is "4,509,007,872 bytes (4.51 GB on disk)" while the test target is "4,508,913,664 bytes (4.51 GB on disk)". I assume the difference is format-related, yes?

Probably. There is some overhead in allocation unit size between a DVD and a hard drive, and DVD sectors are not the same size as hard drive sectors.

OK, if you point handbrake at the ISO file, and assuming the location "/Documents/Red/iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies/DUNKIRK.m4v" is writable, what happens? You should not need to mount the ISO, just open it with handbrake.

Sorry, don't know what you mean by "ISO file". The Finder copy of the unencypted disc?

Sorry, I was thinking using the dd command to read the entire disk to a single "image" file, normally referred to as an ISO.

At this point, though, you should be able to tell handbrake to open the VOBSUB folder in the directory structure of the copied disk, and it will scan it for titles. If they truly are unencrypted, you should be able to encode the titles you want from there. This is also much faster than making multiple attempts at resolving the issue than doing so from the optical media.

hey, it's been a while since I dealt with a DVD in that way... And I've been doing a lot of subtitle work. (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! :P )

OK, correct directory is VIDEO_TS.

Boys, boys, boys -- no squabbling during playtime.

Opened VIDEO_TS, Handbrake selected the main title and encoded it as required.
