H.265 mp4 file cannot be opened by Quicktime Player

Post by bgreenstone »

Just as an experiment to see how quickly Handbrake 1.0.7 could encode an H.265 / HEVC file I took a 21 minute long / 182GB existing HEVC .mov file and ran it through Handbrake. I exported it as an MP4 H.265 file. It took about several hours, and at the end I had a 4.5GB file that won't open in QuickTime Player. I get an error dialog stating, "The file isn’t compatible with QuickTime Player".

This is on a Mac Pro running 10.13.2

Here are links to screenshots of the settings I used for export:

Here is the log file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8g0bhpzcdmy45 ... 3.txt?dl=0

Thanks,

This should be fixed in the nightly builds and will make its way to the next major release.

https://handbrake.fr/nightly.php

You should be able to fix your existing output using Subler:

https://subler.org

Under Preferences > Advanced, there is a checkbox for "HEVC: Force QuickTime Compatibility".

Thanks for the info! I'll try it with the nightly build and see what happens. Subler didn't let me fix the existing file, however. I get an error from that about "The file is not a mp4 file."

Is there a free app, or a tool, or a CLI command displaying the I/B/P sequence and GOP length
of an mp4 file ?
(this should better explain why some mp4 are not born equal)

This did not work for me. I re-saved file in Subler with that setting and Optimized in Subler with no success.

Maybe try File > New and import the existing MP4 file (+ button at the top-left of the window), then saving a new file (to a different location or with a different name, as overwriting the input file will not work) instead?

Thank you! That did it. Success at last. Thank you again!
