SUBTITLE ISSUE MacBook Pro OS Sierra

Post by VanGogh »

Hello. Ever since I upgraded to MacBook Pro (OS Sierra 12.12) Handbrake (1.0.7) stopped working for my .srt files. Before it was so easy to upload an mp3 or mkv file, import external .srt files (usually English and French) and encode all together into a much smaller file size & both .srt showing/working. The .srt were soft encoded, meaning I could switch them off any time I wanted.
Now the encode finishes, the .srt files show in the upper tab (under subtitles) yet nothing is appearing on the actual screen when playing the movie with the selected sub. Its as if there is something there to prevent the .srt showing up on the screen.
Please help. Thanks
PS: sorry if my tech jargon isn't on point. Tried to explain the issue as best as I could

Handbrake is passing the subtitles through to the output file. What are you trying to play the file with?

not sure what you mean. But I always play my files through VLC. Are you saying it could be the VLC problem that the subs aren't appearing on the screen?

Try in QuickTime Player too. And make sure the tracks are enabled in the Subtitles menu (in both VLC and QuickTIme Player).

Can’t open in QuickTime Player and in VLC the subs setting is set to play & display yet nothing is coming through. Btw the same happens when playing file on TV. Nothing is showing on the screen!

I didn't notice you were talking about mkv. So do you see the subtitles tracks in the vlc subtitles menu or not?

Yes. I see them both (english & french) in the subtitles menu but when I select one or the other they aren’t appearing on the screen! So frustrating!

And you are sure that there's actual content in the SRTs? You can check this with a program like Jubler(.org).

Hello here

I have the same issue, I think.

Encoding a mkv file with 2 subtitle tracks, srt (just to make a lighter file). Subtitles won't display in VLC. Info about the file in VLC says subtitles are in "ASS" format.
When reopening the newly encoded file in Handbrake, subtitles are now in ASS, although in the original subtitles (before reencoding) were in srt.
Handbrake is converting my subtitles form srt to ASS :?:

I have to remux the light movie with the subtitles from the large movie, and this is not optimal

Did I miss something or is this a bug ?
Thanks for your help

I would add that my log is similar to the one posted as example above. Subtitle tracks appear as text and passthru.

Yes, HB converts SRT subs to ASS. Nothing you can do about it with HB.

Not sure if it's a Sierra issue but I've been trying to make an mp4 file from an mkv file and I cannot get subtitles on the mp4. In VLC the best I've been able to display is chapter numbers as subtitles in the mp4 file. The mkv file has the subtitles and they play in VLC, although they must be selected from the subtitles menu. With the mkv file the VLC subtitles menu displays 2 options - 1 displays chapter numbers and 2 displays the actual English subtitles of the French being spoken in the scene.

I've never had this issue before with any subtitled mkv file. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. Here is a link to the activity log in my dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jqhmr6au9gdfr ... 5.txt?dl=0

There is an issue in VLC versions 2.2.5, 2.2.5.1, and 2.2.6, as well as 2.2.x nightly builds from September 2017 and earlier, regarding subtitle display on macOS. The issue was fixed in the VLC 2.2.7 stable release and now VLC is up to an even higher version (2.2.8). If you want correct subtitle display in VLC, the current stable version 2.2.8 works fine (download here). As far as prior to this bug, version 2.2.4 and earlier did not have this bug, but they are old and have compatibility problems on macOS 10.13 High Sierra, only versions 2.2.7 and later work on High Sierra.

So if you want to test subtitle display on macOS in VLC, use one of the VLC versions that has correct subtitle display as I explained (2.2.7 and later or 2.2.4 and earlier, current version 2.2.8 works fine). QuickTime cannot display Advanced SubStation / SubStation Alpha subtitles unless you are using the old QuickTime 7 with another program called Perian installed and you will probably also want Xiph Components for QuickTime and the WebM Component too for support of more codecs (I linked to all 4 of them), but even that is kind of a bad solution as QuickTime 7 for macOS, Perian, Xiph Components for QuickTime, and the WebM Component are all old discontinued software, no longer updated, not updated in several years. You will not find any support for, for instance, the H.265 or VP9 video codecs or Opus audio codec if using QuickTime 7 with Perian and the Xiph Components and WebM Component due to these codecs being newer; however on the plus side, QuickTime 7 is able to play MIDI music files which is something not actually supported by most modern media players anymore. The modern QuickTime X has no support for .ASS/.SSA subtitles or that many other things either and is really a step backwards in terms of format support.

If you want to try another video player to test out subtitles other than VLC I suggest testing it in mpv, or, if you are unsatisfied with the GUI of mpv, you can try out IINA, a more complete GUI for mpv that is specifically for macOS. mpv is another cross-platform open-source free software video player like VLC which, like VLC, is mostly based on ffmpeg for backend work of video and audio processing. And IINA is a macOS graphical user interface for mpv that comes with mpv included inside the .app, which has a more intuitive user interface than regular mpv. If you want to test playing videos, I suggest that along with VLC Media Player, you also try out either plain vanilla mpv or the IINA frontend of mpv. This is good for testing videos in multiple video players. Also, mpv and IINA do not have any compatibility problems with macOS 10.13 High Sierra the way VLC 2.2.6 and earlier do.

But as for the main media player to use and have working subtitle display on macOS, I highly recommend the latest VLC 2.2.8 or alternately IINA is also quite good. VLC 2.2.5 thru 2.2.6 did not display subtitles correctly and QuickTime only does it if you use the old QuickTime 7 with all those other components such as Perian and so forth which are all very old outdated software. Many think IINA is the best video player for Macs, although personally I like VLC 2.2.8 a little bit better due to there being some video files that only work correctly in VLC for me and which crash other video players (they are both very good video players): https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments ... _iina_its/

Re: SUBTITLE ISSUE MacBook Pro OS Sierra

Post by gregjp »

Not a Mac OS Sierra issue. I've been trying to convert an mkv file which displays subtitles in VLC but not when converted to mp4 with Handbrake - no matter what settings I used. So I downloaded free version of Any Video Converter and it handled the conversion to mp4 quicker and the subtitles appeared when the mp4 file was played back in VLC. I love Handbrake but it obviously didn't work in this instance. Hopefully this issue will be rectified in subsequent releases.
