Output Dimensions Suddenly Can't Be Changed

Post by vincentpolisi »

I've been using Handbrake for years. Never any issue. Suddenly, last night, it started automatically taking 1280x720 source and outputting it to 834x680 and it won't allow me to change the setting.

MacOS Sierra 10.12.6 Handbrake 1.0.7

No error shown. It's just cutting off the sides of the video on output.

You have some pretty heavy cropping going on there, so after cropping, it looks about right.

HandBrake won't allow you to up-scale content. If you've got mixed aspect content, you might want to set cropping to 0,0,0,0

Set the cropping to 0 if you don't want it.

Why is it cropping all of a sudden?

Setting the cropping to 0 now has it aligned right instead of centered. This is bizarre. I've changed nothing and never had this issue before.

It found consistent dark space on one or more sides. Been a default feature for a long time.

@mduell

Interesting. The video is primarily black Keynote slides which obviously are black on both sides until it hits the testimonial video.

Is there a way to not have it do that?

Make sure you press enter after changing the crop value.

Is there a way to not have it do that?
Choose manual cropping, set it to 0 on all sides, and save it in a preset (with your other settings).

I did that but it aligns it right as shown in the image above.

Per your log you only zeroed the cropping on the top, not the other 3 sides.

Post the encode log for the encoding with those settings configured. Your last one showed otherwise.

I'm on Windows (nightly 20170828), but I will say I see similar problems with changing the top or bottom crop while Anamorphic is set to Auto, where the output display size is not at all what you'd expect. Changing the Anamorphic to Loose or None will fix out the output display size, as will choosing a different preset once the crop has been changed.

After loading source: http://i.imgur.com/lGjZp37.png
After changing crop: http://i.imgur.com/gRxqMVA.png
After changing anamorphic: http://i.imgur.com/pUoKMpk.png

Edit: did a quick single chapter encode after changing the crop (2nd picture basically). Full encode log
Relevant portion:

Code: Select all

[19:41:24] + Crop and Scale (width=1920:height=800:crop-top=0:crop-bottom=0:crop-left=0:crop-right=0)
[19:41:24] + source: 1920 * 1080, crop (0/0/0/0): 1920 * 1080, scale: 1920 * 800
[19:41:24] + Output geometry
...
[19:41:24] + storage dimensions: 1920 x 800
[19:41:24] + pixel aspect ratio: 20 : 27
[19:41:24] + display dimensions: 1422 x 800
This is repeatable in the other direction too. Starting with 0 crop, Anamorphic set to Automatic, and changing the top and bottom crop to >0 will actually cause the output width to increase.

My normal presets don't use Anamorphic: Automatic, so I hadn't actually noticed this before looking at this thread and trying to duplicate.

Workaround: change Anamorphic to Loose or None and then change your crop (you can then change it back to Automatic if you want as long as you don't change the crop again).

I did a quick encode and added it above (again, I'm on Windows nightlies, but problem seems to be the same). Seems pretty easy to reproduce. Not really a problem for me (I don't use Anamorphic: Automatic normally), but I can open an issue on Github for this if needed.

FWIW, I downloaded the latest nightly on a Mac and the problem is very similar as I described above on Windows. On Mac, reducing the top and bottom crop while set to Anamorphic: Auto still does weird things, but increasing it seems to behave, at least most of the time. It's bizarre. You can very easily end up with crazy PAR and output display sizes just by altering the crop multiple times, and it will also sometimes alter the storage size. Both Windows and Mac are doing very similar things, although they are not strictly identical. The workaround of changing Anamorphic to Loose or None before changing your crop seems to work on both platforms though.

NOTE: I did find a reported issue (https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/issues/812) that may be related (edit: not related per s55), although that issue is described as a problem specifically with the Windows GUI, and also listed as fixed in nightlies.

That issue is not related.
