Subtitles Missing

I have been having problems ripping DVDs with subtitles burned in for a few months now. This is new—I never had issues before, but now no matter what I try, I can't get the subtitles to work.

I'm running Handbrake 1.0.7.

This is happening on a brand new iMac running High Sierra 10.13 beta as well as an older iMac running Mac O X Lion 10.7.5.

I've looked at other threads on this forum including this one and I've configured my subtitle defaults so in this way:

- Track selection behavior: First matching selected languages
- Languages: English
- Options: Add closed captions when available (checked)
- Options: Add foreign audio search (checked)
- Burn-in behavior: First selected track
- DVD subtitles (checked)
- Blu-ray subtitles (checked)

Nothing works. I'm really confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As always, the encode log tells all: You picked forced subs only, and no forced subs were found, so you go no subs.

Sounds like you want to deselect foreign audio search and then save your settings as a new preset.

For the future, be aware that subtitles are very difficult to deal with as "defaults", because disk authors have so many options to chose.

Given the film you have, there is ONLY going to be a "full" English subtitle track, so "forced only" does not apply. Even when their might be (perhaps an English dub of this movie would have only signs subtitled), it could be in a separate track, or they might be interspersed in a "full" track, marked as "forced".

If they are embedded, "Forced only" will grab just those that are marked. Separate track, "Foreign audio search" should find it.

But, the default selections should always be checked. This is where being able to PLAY the selected file first with something like VLC comes in handy, because you can check the subtitle layout before getting into handbrake.
