subtitles issue

I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm trying to convert a Russian DVD with English subtitles to MP4, but the subtitles won't show up for love nor money. I've tried opening in QuickTime and VLC, to no avail. I've tried "Foreign Audio" search with "Forced Only" and "Burned In" ticked, and I've tried selecting "O: English (4:3) [VOBSUB]" with those options, all to no avail. I've tried different combinations of the checkboxes, too, but after about ten attempts to convert using different settings, no subtitles show up no matter what I try. My activity log is below.

Your subtitle track is language "Unknown", so handbrake can't auto-select it:

Woodstock - many thanks for the reply. I noticed that in the log, too, but as I mentioned, I've tried manually selecting "O: English (4:3) [VOBSUB]", and that's the only other option available, as you can see:

No matter which of those options I choose, no subtitles show up in the MP4 file (checking in both QuickTime and VLC). And the subtitle menus are greyed out in both those apps, too, so the subtitles definitely aren't there.

I've tried the latest Mac build on the "Nightly Builds" page, too, with the same result. I did find an SRT file for the film online and tried adding that - that worked but the subtitles weren't very good, unfortunately, and weren't timed well, either.

I'm not sure how I was supposed to know that, without being able to understand the logs myself. ;) The op's description of his or her problem exactly matches mine - trying to include subtitles in an mp4 but none of the options he or she tries works. As a software developer myself, I always find it much easier to have as much information about a single problem in a single thread of our forums rather than a new thread for every user. I looked at the forum rules but didn't see anything saying that users must always create a new thread even if they seem to be having the same problem as someone else. I'll certainly do that in the future. Please split this into another thread so that I do not derail the op's question and so that I can get relevant help (or I can just copy this into a new thread myself). Apologies to the op - I thought this was the same issue and did not mean to distract him or her from getting help.

No worries.

You probably want to investigate the Configure Defaults sheet. Within are the rules for subtitle selection. For instance, you can choose to select the first subtitle of any language and always burn it in (or whatever). These settings are what get used for batch encoding with the queue and when saving a custom preset. Changes to the panel you've screenshotted are not; they're derived from the Configure Defaults sheet.
