subtitles not showing up

When I try to convert a file to another format, it doesn't include the subs I choose. I have tried multiple files and all sorts of settings, but no subs.

Running handbrake 1.0.7 on iMac with Sierra 10.12.5

Perhaps your player does not support the extension to the MP4 standard that allows VOBSUB subtitles to be in MP4 files?

This is a common issue when using QuickTime to play files. Have you tried playing the file with, say, VLC by videolan.org ?

Indeed, most Apple software and devices do not support VOBSUB "soft" subs (the kind you can turn on and off while watching) in MP4. You will likely want to select the burn in option to make the text permanently part of the video, or use another player like VLC, as Woodstock suggests.

I tried burn in with same result. This issue only occurred after the update. I usually put the mp4 in iTunes and stream to my Apple tv, and there was never an issue with subs before the update. Can my settings be wrong?

I tried a reinstall of handbrake but no change. I also tried downgrading but still same issue.

Paste an activity log from the burned-in subs encode and we'll tell you.

You might also want to try the current nightly build.

Sorry you're having such a hard time. Worst case, if you can provide a source sample we can try to reproduce the issue.

I am sorry, but English is my 2. language, so it takes a little more effort for me to translate the terms in my head. I have tried the current nightly build. No change. Except 1 file with working subs, that I couldn't recreate. All tries before and after that was without luck. Tomorrow I will read this thread again, to see if I missed something, and paste the activity log for the working file, if I can locate it.

quick question... how can it be that even though I delete handbrake completely from my Mac, and then reinstall it, it keeps my old settings etc. Why can't I make a clean install?

You will need to delete the following files/folders, which is where HandBrake stores its configuration data (common for Mac apps):

/Users/you/Library/Application Support/HandBrake
/Users/you/Library/Preferences/fr.handbrake.HandBrake.plist

Open a Finder window (e.g. your home folder), and from the menu at the top of the screen select Go > Go to Folder... (or equivalent in your language). Then type ~/Library and select Go. From there you can navigate to the Application Support folder and trash the HandBrake folder inside, and navigate to the Preferences folder and trash the fr.handbrake.HandBrake.plist file inside.

Okay. I tried to delete the files mentioned and installed a version 1.0.7, same results.
Deleted all the files again, installed 1.0.2, same results.
I have tried the nightly builds yesterday, same results.

Select Configure Defaults. Set the Track Selection Behavior to First Matching Selected Languages, then select dansk from the list. Select OK. Then save a new custom preset (Toggle Presets, then select +).

Basically, the Configure Defaults settings are what you need to change.

Nevermind, I added Burn-in behaviour to the defaults, and now it works. This was driving me crazy, thank you for all your patience and help.

I've been having trouble with this too. It seems like up until recently I never had trouble using Handbrake to rip a DVD with subtitles burned in. Now for the life of me I can't get it to work. I've tried everything noted here and no dice. Was there a change in the subtitle handling in a recent update to Handbrake?

Without logs, it is very difficult to point you in the right direction. You MAY have the same issue as the original poster of this thread, but it could be completely unrelated.

As such, it is best to start a new topic, and post the logs from YOUR encode.
