How can I change from a 4:3 to 16.9 output frame?

Post by Ramroumtx »

Hi,

I am trying take a video and convert it to 16:9 because it is squashed in 4.3. How can I do that?

You did not include the full log, so we don't see how Handbrake saw the file, or what settings you used. And it looks like the source is encrypted, and you have nothing installed to decrypt it; but, without the first part of the log, it's hard to tell.

If you were copying from the Activity Window, you need to pull the full log. That is stored on your drive as a separate file for each encode.

The red-on-pink box above has a link to tell you where these log files are stored.

I basically just want to know if there is a setting I can do to give me the 16;9 frame.

OK, the DVD itself is reporting 4:3 aspect ratio, which is normal; the video is stored as 4:3. I see nothing in the configuration that says it should be displayed as 16:9 or any other aspect ratio, for that matter:
[09:52:21] * source
[09:52:21] + /dev/disk6
[09:52:21] + title 1, chapter(s) 1 to 4
[09:52:21] * destination
[09:52:21] + /Volumes/Other Stuff/Tomas Ramos Video Project/10_Egypt.mp4
[09:52:21] + container: MPEG-4 (libavformat)
[09:52:21] + chapter markers
[09:52:21] * video track
[09:52:21] + decoder: mpeg2video
[09:52:21] + bitrate 9558 kbps
[09:52:21] + filters
[09:52:21] + Comb Detect (mode=3:spatial-metric=2:motion-thresh=1:spatial-thresh=1:filter-mode=2:block-thresh=40:block-width=16:block-height=16)
[09:52:21] + Decomb (mode=39)
[09:52:21] + Framerate Shaper (mode=0:rate=27000000/900900)
[09:52:21] + frame rate: same as source (around 29.970 fps)
[09:52:21] + Crop and Scale (width=688:height=470:crop-top=6:crop-bottom=4:crop-left=6:crop-right=10)
[09:52:21] + source: 704 * 480, crop (6/4/6/10): 688 * 470, scale: 688 * 470
[09:52:21] + Output geometry
[09:52:21] + storage dimensions: 688 x 470
[09:52:21] + pixel aspect ratio: 853 : 720
[09:52:21] + display dimensions: 815 x 470
[09:52:21] + encoder: H.264 (libx264)
[09:52:21] + preset: veryfast
[09:52:21] + profile: main
[09:52:21] + level: 4.0
[09:52:21] + quality: 19.00 (RF)
[09:52:21] * audio track 1
[09:52:21] + decoder: Unknown (AC3) (2.0 ch) (track 1, id 0x80bd)
[09:52:21] + bitrate: 256 kbps, samplerate: 48000 Hz
[09:52:21] + mixdown: Stereo
[09:52:21] + encoder: AAC (Apple AudioToolbox)
[09:52:21] + bitrate: 160 kbps, samplerate: 48000 Hz
Since the source does not appear to have anamorphic values to make it 16:9, I think stretching this horizontally would require a custom anamorphic setting, which, unfortunately, you can't do within the Windows GUI.

But, then again, I'm just guessing at that - I'm certainly not an anamorphic expert!

Hmmm.... I forgot that you're not on Windows. The Mac GUI should have custom anamorphic, but I don't know how to make that work.

Maybe Ritsuka can give you the proper information for that.

Set the Anamorphic option to Custom, uncheck Keep aspect ration, and then either set the display size, or the PAR you want.

Fantastic, your answer just solved the very problem I came to this forum for. I've been using handbrake for a long time to convert Tivo files into iTunes friendly video's using the "High Profile" setting, however recently handbrake has been defaulting "some" of the Tivo files to display size 1440 x 1080 for some reason despite the native files being 1920 x 1080 (verified). I think this started after upgrading to 1.0.7 as nothing else has changed with mu setup? Is this a bug I should submit?

Tivo or the upstream broadcast probably set the aspect ratio flag incorrectly. Thankfully, HandBrake lets you overcome that sort of issue, as you've recently discovered.

HB has many problems. the message boards are full of them. Now when I import a 19.9 it changes to a 4.3 on its own. Yesterday I spent 4 hours trying to solve a BLACK preview problem after conversion. JUST TOO MANY BUGS for such a little program
