New Presets and Roku 2XS

Post by krbmedia »

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:

I have been having issues with ripping DVDs to plex with my Roku 2XS via the Plex Media server. Sometimes the black bars are there and sometimes they are not and the new presets are very confusing. For example, I have a dvd that when i play it in my VLC there is no letterbox yet when I convert it in Handbrake and play in VLC there is, so obviously I'm using the wrong preset. Is there a good one to use as a general rule so it avoids this issue.

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of OSX are you running. etc.

I'm using Handbrake 1.03 on the mac (latest OS Sierra) I have a Roku 3100X (2XS) and use Plex Media server on my NAS to stream

If there was any exception or error displayed, please copy it and paste it here:

Please include the scan or encode log:

Re: New Presets and Roku 2XS

The log you provided shows HandBrake cropped 58 top, 62 bottom to remove the black bars. Given the output resolution i'd say you've got 2.35 aspet ration content rather than 1.78 so on a 16:9 monitor, you will always get black bars unless you zoom in and chop of the sides of the video.

If you just getting tiny black bars, you may need to manually adjust cropping but note, sometimes videos have subtitles in the black bars below the video which can throw off auto-crop.

You've not done anything wrong here.

Why is there no black bars when I play the ripped DVD folder though? What is the best preset I should use?

Maybe the player window has shrunk the video to fit the content? Maybe it's zoomed in? I don't know.

The Roku presets are fine for use with the Roku.

Picture settings allows you to adjust cropping. If you see no black bars there, then it's the player that adds the black bars in, and it's correct that it should if it's 2.35 content displaying on a 1.78 screen.

Same player but ok. Any particular Roku preset to use with my model? I use Plex if that matters.
