Error message: "Your destination disk is almost full."

Post by snafas »

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:
After installing the latest version 1.0.1 I get an error message saying: "Your destination disk is almost full. You need to make more space available on your destination disk." I have at least 3 GB free on my internal drive and the output file should be around 250 MB. I have tried changing the destination to a USB stick with 7 GB free and an external USB Drive with more than 1 TB free and I still get the same error message. The activity log included is from starting the encode with my internal drive as destination.

How much free disk space is required? Is there anything I can do to be able to run the encode with the disk space that is available?

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of OSX are you running. etc.
Handbrake Version 1.0.1 (2016122900)
Mac mini (2011), Processor: 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Mac OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5 (14F2009)

Did you remove the previous job from the queue? You are probably restarting always the first one that had the almost full disk as destination.
HandBrake now checks if there are at least 5 GB free on the destination disk. On a more general remark, having only 3 GB free on your start up disk is not a good idea.

I also had the same problem on a disk with much space (>100GO) and after relaunching HB1.01

Plus I have a 2.5Go ramdisk used as download target and "temporary work" disk (quite enough for my files). If I can't use it as destination for HB output, it's quite a loss...

Anyway, great work for many years. Hope there will be solutions for these small glitches

"Quite a loss" in what way? Certainly not in encoding speed, because that's a CPU-intensive task, rather than I/O bound.

Kind of like saying not being able to use a jet-powered dragster is "quite a loss" on your trip to the grocery store. :)

Indeed (and of course) certainly not in speed. But I like to do all temporary stuff in my ramdisk, downloads, conversions, browser cache (I like this one), anything that is not pure longtime storage. Plus my HD is a good'ol mechanical beast, not SSD. I *am* paranoïd about HD fatigue (and yeah everything of value is backed up, multiple times, several locations, I know my stuff). My beeing paranoïd has saved my ass more than once in those last 25 years. Sure some people think all my precautions are overkill, but I still have my student's files from the 1990's (ok, not very usefull) and never lost one precious file or photo, and I keep my HDs a veeeerrry long time.

So, yes, If I can't convert to my ramdisk, that's quite a loss *for me*. Certainly no matter to make a big fuss about or to alter HB (which I will still use because it's a great product I'm very grateful for).

Still an issue that I should be able to convert a small file to a secondary disk that has less than 5GB and is not a Startup disk.
It should be a preference setting.
A warning is alright but Handbrake should also be able to estimate the size of the encoded file based on the settings (or at least do a worst scenario estimation) and if you know by experience the expected size of the file, you should still be able to go ahead with the conversion.

lol nope, does not exist except at comical/not useful levels.

If using ABR it should be pretty easy to estimate a filesize pre-encode, using CQ you cant really estimate until encoding begins.

It could be if you had accurate length detection, which HB notably lacks and one of the reasons target filesize was pulled.

Even then, at the very best you could predict some sort of final size, maybe, halfway through the encode.

The hard part is just knowing when halfway is...

hi, i have the same issue. I have Macbook Air and I have 2.5-3 GB free. When I convert small files (5 MB, 10 MB, 20 MB) even for them, Handbrake shouldn't be asking for 5 GB free destination imho.

PS: this message is offcourse sent with thanks for this app. :)

Oddly enough, I was getting this pop-up error message with 3TB left on my drive. Drove me crazy. Long story short; the destination folder did not exist for season 7. Once I created the dest folder, the error went away.
