Can't open the file or gives me a "page" looking icon when finished converting

Post by Ramroumtx »

Hello,

I hope someone can help me with this. Not all the time but some of the time, when I convert DVD's to MP4 on Handbrake (Version 0.9.9 x86_64 (2013051800)) I get a page looking icon and cannot open it after its done converting. Usually when it finishes it shows a mini icon of the video next to the title. My MBK is running version 10.7.5. I usually have to redo it again at another computer or change the title name even if its the simplest word and that sometimes does not work.

This time it shows a mini icon if the vlc icon but it won't play. The DVD I converted this time is about 6 hours long but I have converted long DVDs before and they never gave me an issue. The settings were the same as the ones that worked in the past. Can anyone help me resolve this issue?

Try a recent version, 0.9.9 is very old.

Also could you please post your logs, instructions can be found here:

Ok so I have updated to the recent version on another computer which did the same thing. I attached the recent activity log. I hope that this is what your looking for. I am new to this so if I'm wrong, please let me know so I can get the right info for you.

You didn't include the full log, so we can not verify the version number. But this error is impossible in recent versions

Code: Select all

MP4ERROR: File size exceeded 4 GB; output unplayable. Enable "Large file size" to fix it.
So you do not have a recent version still.

Need the full encode log from the recent version. What you've pasted is not useful.

It won't let me paste the entire log. It just keeps telling me that I've reach the maximum word count. Can you tell me how I can paste the entire log so I can give you something useful to work with?

Use a pastebin site, then post the link here.

I tried to do it there but it said that it exceeds the word count unless I am clearly doing something wrong. Any suggestions?

Is that right? I had to cut out stuff in order to do this.

That's not a complete encode log... we need to see what encode you did.

Thanks for updating to 0.10.2.

The libdvdread CHECK_VALUE errors typically indicate a poorly mastered DVD. Set-top DVD video recorders, like the ones used to record television, typically make poor discs like this.

Since the log is huge because of these errors, use something like http://expirebox.com/ and post the link here.

So now that I updated it I went to change the custom size of the display and it won't let me select "Keep Aspect Ratio" when I want to change the "Display Width". I would have to deselect the "Keep Aspect Ratio" in order to change it to make the video image bigger. The other version let me do both. Is there a way I can fix that?

As for the encoding: Can you tell me step by step what I need to do please so I can get this right for you? Is an encode log different than "Window Activity"?

This is what I have been doing:
Go to the Handbrake "Window" Menu on top of my screen
I then select "Activity Window"
Which then opens a mini window with an extremely verrrry long box full of text.

What am I doing wrong?

That's actually not what the setting is intended to do. I'll let someone else chime in with their thoughts on the keep aspect part.

They're the same thing, but a complete encode log is also kept for every single video you make. We could use that.

This should help: https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/ActivityLog

Short version:
  • Open a new Finder window.
Using the menu at the very top of your screen, select Go > Go to Folder...
Enter ~/Library/Application Support/HandBrake/ in the box
Find the log with name and date corresponding to your video

/Users/me/Library/Application Support/HandBrake/EncodeLogs/peter 2015-09-08 10-12-25.txt

So thats what I got but there is a ton of text in there that won't let me copy and paste it into a pastebin site because its too long.

Open http://expirebox.com in your web browser and drag the file to where it says "just select file or Drag and Drop any file here". Then give us the download link.

That worked, but it was an older log from HandBrake 0.9.9. Can you find the log made by HandBrake 0.10.2? The first couple of lines in the file tell you which version created it.

Re: Can't open the file or gives me a "page" looking icon when finished converting

Post by BradleyS »

Aside from the read errors due to poor mastering by what I assume is a set-top DVD/AVCHD/Blu-ray recorder, it looks like the encode completed successfully.

My first thought is, I wonder if MP4 or M4V files aren't set to open with your media player (probably QuickTime Player)? If you hold the Control key on your keyboard, and at the same time click on the file, a menu should come up. What do you see as the default under, "Open With"?

I see VLC because I have that set to all my videos. Not everything opens with quicktime player which is why I have it set that way. When I go open it with quicktime player it says "Quicktime Player can't open "peter.mp4" because the movie's file format isn't recognized." Now, that was when I was using the older version. When I updated to the newer handbrake version, and re-did the conversion, it opens fine in VLC but the picture is too small.

What I think is happening is that the older HandBrake version couldn't cope with the mastering errors in your source, unlike the newer version (which still prints a lot of warnings to the log). So the file works.

If you want to increase the display size of your videos, ideally you should adjust VLC to be the size you want, rather than use Custom Anamorphic as it's not designed for this purpose. Custom Anamorphic seems to work properly for me, though perhaps different than in HandBrake 0.9.9. In the VLC (2.2.0 here) preferences, uncheck the option "Resize interface to the native video size". You can resize the video player and it will scale all videos to that size. It should remember the size between launches.

Hmm. Ok I see what your kind of saying but I want the actual video to not be so small. How can I make the video file itself larger so that way when I double click on it, its not 352x480. I want it to be 720x480. How can I do that?

It won't let me adjust the output size

In the example you gave:

Code: Select all

[16:53:17] + storage dimensions: 336 * 460, mod 2
[16:53:17] + pixel aspect ratio: 20 / 11
[16:53:17] + display dimensions: 610 * 460
So it's displaying at 610x460 pixels. If you really want to (ab)use Custom Anamorphic, you can simply multiply the display width and height by whatever enlargement you want. 720 display width is the original 610 * 1.18, so the corresponding display height would be the original 460 * 1.18 = 543. So set 720x543 and imagine it's "Keep Aspect Ratio". Just have to do the math.
