MKV -> MP4: Great video quality, choppy sound!

Post by mightywolve »

Dear forum,

I just downloaded HandBrake to convert MKV format to MP4 format files to
play on my apple tv (3).
For converting a MKV file I used the preset AppleTV3. Once I put the
converted file in iTunes to play on my TV it works great, video wise.
Once I play the converted file, the quality of the video is great, but the
audio is very choppy and unbearable to listen to.

Any idea what went wrong?

Thanks in advance!!

Not a clue. I thought maybe it was changing the sample rate, but the sample rate is the same for the source and encoded audio.

Have you had this problem with other files?

Did not try it yet, with other files!
But it happend twice with the same file though..
Will test it now!

Edit: Tried it with another file, and the problem is solved! No choppy sound. So does that mean that the other file is corrupted or?

It's possible that the source file is corrupted, but I'm sure you've played it in the same player to see if it's good or bad to test.

Nevermind, I see that your source is an mkv and the ATVs don't care for those...

Its a 10 part series. All mkv format. I tried it with two episodes and they both ended up with choppy sound after conversion..

Hello, if you have an MKV then re-encoding it is pointless and a waste of time, you need to remux it (basically like changing the wrapping paper on a gif without opening the box and repacking the contents).

I don't know if you are on mac, but if you are, great, easy tools like subler, iFlicks and others will do the job in literally 30 seconds and because its a remux not a re-encode there are no stutter problems.

My experience - converted 18TB of data from MKV to MP4/M4V for iTunes all played through ATV - no probs.

If you need any more advice on it just send me a PM.

Chris.
