Great tutorial.

Maybe I'm not discerning enough in using the different HB settings (and thus create less opportunity for me to mess something up) - but this worked like a charm first time.

Many thanks.

I've searched this site for a solution to ripping Rush Hour 3 and have tried several of the recommendations, DTOX, Fairmount, MacTheRipper, etc., none of these have worked for me and I can't figure out what to do next. I've followed the processes for implementing Fairmount, then DTOX, etc. but Fairmount locks up then crashes, DTOX locks up and crashes shortly afterward and MacTheRipper crashes too. I'm beginning to thing it is the DVD and not anything else. I've just gone through and straight-forward converted over 120+ DVD's to my ATV using HandBrake + MetaX for tags and have had zero problems. A couple of the videos I ran into were resolved with quick fixes from this forum but I've never been able to get Rush Hour 3 converted.

Any other suggestions would be very helpful, aside from trashing RH3 :D

Thank you!

I guess you're right, I didn't see this when I was looking through the search list.

At any rate, thanks for the tip, I used "AnyDVD" but didn't need to go through the gyrations you noted with "Transmit" and "Xlight". Basically all I did was create a DVD copy onto my Desktop in XP then moved that folder to my Mac folder and launched Handbrake, seemed to work like a charm.

I figured out that AnyDVD only worked once then I had to reboot and run it again, the fun and games of Windows XP.

Thanks again!

Ah-Well.

Nice Write-up!
Well, since the source for MtR never was (and likely never will be) open, and the current version is no longer really free, perhaps it's time for the community to talk about an complete end-to-end Open Source ripper project. It seems that VLC & Fairmount gets you more than halfway there, and they are both open projects, right?

I'm actually INCREDIBLY green when it comes to OS X development (I used to do a lot of C, but these days I mostly just do SQL work), but I think it would be fun to work on a project like that... and richly satisfying to tell the closed-source "beta with required donations because we can't legally charge for it" Mac the Ripper crew, "thanks for the memories."

Question: What is CRF and where is it in HandBrake?

Hi, ripping a multi disk movie and following your instructions. I'm just confused as to what CRF is and where it's set.

Thanks,

This is all covered in the Handbrake manual, but you don't need to worry about it; Handbrake uses CRF by default, unless you've disabled it in the advanced preference pane.

Just a "Thank you" for this sticky

Downloaded the latest 64-bit versions of HandBrake, Fairmount, and VLC (1.0.2 for the Mac). Had been away from ripping/encoding for a bit (work, burglary, so a forced tech refresh). Went through my usual workflow (Fairmount -> DVD2oneX2 -> HandBrake). All files loaded into HandBrake for processing showed up as a single chapter, the length of the movie. Your screen shots jogged my memory (File Set...d'oh!). All is fine now--we have multiple chapters. 0.9.4 is working great, looks great, sounds great. Love the decombing, too. Have a few items (Salem's Lot; I, Claudius) made for TV, look great. Thanks again.

Mark :)

I think I'm gonna take the plunge and buy DVD2One but I have a quick question. Once I rip a dvd using Fairmount and DTOX, is there a way for me to divide up the dvd for dvds that have multiple episodes of tv shows on them?

Of course. DTOX can rip to either a VIDEO_TS folder or a DVD image, both of which can be used in Handbrake as you would the physical disc.

I have a question about DVD2One. I bought it and it's been working very well so far but I seem to have run into a roadblock. Everytime I encode a dvd with it it brings up the wrong number of chapters in handbrake then what DVD2One says it has. DVD2One says the dvd has 17 chapters, while Handbrake says it has 12 chapters after putting the disk image into handbrake after encoding it. It's getting really frustrating because I think I'm going to have to keep guessing which title is right in DVD2One and wasting more time trying to find the right title. Thanks for reading and help would be greatly appreciated.

This method doesnt work if you wanted to keep the visual integrity/quality unchanged..

The idea is that, when you finished ripping both disk in Fellowship of the Ring
and then create a movies only copy on Dtox selecting first folder
then use the (++) add seamless title to add the 2nd folder in
All you're gona get is either to let Dtox reencode to a size SMALLER than a DL DVD-R
Problem with that is Reencoding to a smaller size means u lose quality,
and if you set the settings to Custom and size say 20GB
Still doesnt work because an error message will pop up saying your Merge of Disk 1 rip and Disk 2 Rip (Movie Only for both) WOULD end up being 12 GB and thats over the size of 1 dual layer disk..
Hence doesnt work...

I am however looking to other solutoins to merge them together...
so far hasnt been easy... i was able to merge them into 1 vob set but chapter markers all lost...
no point doing it...

I see this thread has not been updated with any new information recently. Great walk through and I am sure the DTOX software works great for what it does however I was curious if there are any new solutions out there. I literally only need the MP4 file joining capability and really only need to use it for a hand full of movies. If I used it a dozen times that would be a lot.

What I am looking for is a free or at least inexpensive solution to join movies that span two dvd's (right now all I have are the LOTR special editions)

Thanks for any help you might provide.
