Handbrake slow on Mavericks?

Post by NOYB111 »

I don't know if it's just me but it appears that handbrake is super slow to encode on Mavericks. Using Apple TV 3 preset on a 1:40 movie takes 4.5 hours. It seems like it was about half that before. Does this sound reasonable? Is there any tweaking I can do to speed things up? I have the bare minimum apps running in the background. Using a 2010 MacBook Pro i7. I use the latest version of MakeMKV with the latest version of Handbrake. Any advice appreciated.

I did and saw no answers. If you have nothing productive to say, don't comment.

A search on "mavericks" turns up plenty of hits. A few of them are about performance.

So starting a new thread about the same unresolved issue serves what purpose?

As a temporary solution for the slow encoding speed just stop the encode (cancel current & stop) and then click on Start again. The second time around you will get full speed encoding.

Why trying a second time works is beyond me but hopefully a contributor can shed some light on it.

Cheers.

Thanks, I did try that as I saw it in a previous post, but it doesn't do anything for me. My encoding speeds are averaging around 10fps... its crawling. Oh well. I appreciate Handbrake and all the people who work hard to produce it. Im sure they will figure it out eventually. Until then I will let me encodings run while I sleep! :D

What HB version are you using? I'm using the latest nightly and the trick of restarting the encode a second time works every time. YMMV though.

I'm using the latest released version 0.9.9. I will go download the nightly and try that next time. Thanks!

I'm sure some of you will not want to hear this but I'm seeing no decline in speed with my setup (Hackintosh i7-3770, 10.9) always running a current nightly.

Nightly versions and stopping/restarting don't improve anything. Anyone found a fix for this yet?

Does anyone have any information on this? I am using the most current nightly and the latest movie I am converting is taking 4.5 hours! I stop and restart and that does not improve anything. Are there settings in Mavericks I can change to help this? It's getting very frustrating.

Thanks all....

Hey there, NOYB111. Seriously. You've posted seven times so far and not a single encode log so far. No one knows what settings you're using. Post an encode log already.

I didn't post anything because I thought it was a common problem related to the software and Mavericks, not me personally.

Your encode speeds look reasonable for that source and settings

It never took this long before. A couple hours maybe, not 4.5... Does the Apple TV3 setting slow things down more than other settings?

4.5 is an improvement over your previous 5.

I also use the ATV3 setting (with 2 changes, grain & RF22) and my encode times (Blu-Ray), on average, will be 1:1.
Some shorter, some longer, depending on the movie.

But, then my CPU is a little stouter (i7, 3770, 8 processor count) than yours.

As I've mentioned in another post, I've seen no change in speed after updating to Mavericks.

Thanks... I give up. I will just except this is much slower than it was and set my conversions for when I go to bed at night so they can take as long as they want and I don't have to see it! :)
