Incomplete copy of main DVD track

Post by jhp1608 »

Hi there

I think I have followed the rules for seeking help, and apologies if my lack of tech savvy and search skills means I've missed something elsewhere.

I've been happily using Handbrake for a number of years, most recently on the following set up

MacBook Pro
OSX 10.6.8
Handbrake version 0.9.9 x86_64 (2013051800)

The last two attempts I have made to encode from DVD sources have ended up with incomplete output versions - say a 1h40m film will end up with a 53m file, ending abruptly at some point in the middle of the film. I have checked using DVD Player that I have chosen the right track, and am simply using the Apple TV 2 preset with no other specific choices away from the defaults. The two DVDs it has happened to are both not very recent - the one I have tried and failed with today is a Region 2 DVD of "Charley Varrick".

Here is the copy of the Activity Window for my last attempt. If anyone can suggest what the problem might be, I would be very grateful.

Perhaps the disc is damaged, and you could try cleaning it.

Also try preripping with MakeMKV and see if MakeMKV can rip the whole title, or if it fails.

Code: Select all

GUI ERROR dialog: dvdnav: Read Error, Error reading from DVD.
HandBrake is definitely having issues reading this disc. You can either try disabling libdvdnav in the advanced preferences (HandBrake restart required) or pre-rip as Smithcraft suggested above.

Thank you, both. If I do a pre-rip with MakeMKV, is there anything different I need to do in terms of Handbrake settings compared to using the DVD as a direct source? Also, what kind of file(s) does MakeMKV create and will I be able to spot the right one to use as a source for the encoding?

I've never used MakeMKV before and only ever used DVDs as a source, selecting just the whole DVD from Finder.

MKV, surprisingly enough.

Ha! That'll learn me. I meant is it video, video and audio...The way I've been using Handbrake I just point and click on the DVD icon in FIndre and it does the rest.

In any event, it looks like a bust. I tried encoding with libdvdnav disabled and also tried MakeMKV. The first way the encode didn't complete, and MakeMKV refused to complete the copy with the error messages "Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:ID CRC OR ECC ERROR' occurred while reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_03_1.VOB' at offset '2162247680'" followed by Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:UNRECOVERED READ ERROR' occurred while reading reading '/VIDEO_TS/VTS_03_1.VOB' at offset '2162280448'"

I'm guessing a bad DVD unless anyone has any other ideas...

MakeMKV is a ripper, and not a transcoder. I copies the information directly and puts it into a mkv file.

Also, it would appear that in the future, Handbrake will require something other than VLC to deal with DRM with optical media.

You won't need any other settings, as it's the same information as the disc.

Based on the errors MakeMKV is reporting, I'd say so. Inspect the disc for physical damage; if it's scratched you may be able to buff them out enough to get a clean rip/copy.

I think that you mean that USERS will require something other than VLC to deal with DRM as Handbrake has never purported to be a ripper.

VLC does not bundle libdvdcss anymore (since version 2.0). What can be used for decryption is libdvdcss, not VLC - please be specific about it ;-)

Also, we're in the process of deciding whether to stop supporting dvdcss in the MacGUI altogether (it may still work, but won't be officially supported anymore).

No, this is what I mean (and sorry about referring to VLC and no the lib again! ) :

So do I with a pop-up telling the user not to harass this forum but to get a real ripper.

I prefer to suggest preripping with a good ripper to avoid issues where libdvdcss might not handle it right, but I'll let you charm your way into the hearts of the teeming masses! :)

libdvdcss handles only one thing - CSS encryption. Other copy protection "techniques" are handled (sometimes successfully) by libdvdnav.

No thanks. dvdnav is required to support angles, and main feature detection. It's basically superior to dvdread-only operation in all cases except when you want to work around a dvdnav bug.

Not needed if you pre-rip right?

LibDvdNav is not about copy protection. It doesn't do anything to work around it. It's essentially just emulating a DVD player so code on the disc that doesn't trick a DVD player into doing something wrong, shouldn't trick libdvdnav.
