Soft subtitles

Post by ivanpasic » Sat Aug 17, 2013 5:21 pm

Hello there, I am trying to digitalize my movie collection at home. I am
having issues with subtitles. I convert using the ATV3 pre-set format and
select appropriate subtitles. I de-select burned-in subtitles as I prefer
soft subs. When I play the converted movie in iTunes or ATV3 there are no
subtitles. When I play the same movie in VLC, I am able to turn subs on and
off.

Find my activity log inserted below.

I should add this is a legally purchased DVD I am ripping for my own digital collection.

Anyone has an idea on how to fix this?

Thanks!

The Apple ecosystem only supports some subtitle types and I do not think that VOB/Sub is one of them.

I'd wait until one of my colleagues more skilled with the Apple ecosystem answers though.

if your source has a closed caption subtitle track, use that... apple likes those...

thanks for your replies. no, the movie doesn't have closed captions. so there is no way to have soft subtitles on atv3 using handbrake?

You would have to do a bit of work to get it to work.

First you would need to decide whether you want to OCR the subtitles, or find them off of the internet.

Then you pre-rip with MakeMKV.

You take that file and use mkvtoolnix to mux in the text subtitle file.

Then you feed that file to Handbrake!

Easypeasy!

It could only be easier if the MP4 container supported VOBSUB in the first place.

Presuming you locate or OCR the subtitles to Subrip (.srt) format you can add them as an external subtitle file in HandBrake, no faffing about with MakeMKV and MKVToolNix required.

If you want MP4 soft subs, you can use SRT files, so you don't have to embed them in the source. You can get SRT files from the internet or via OCR.

Even if there were an official spec, Apple probably wouldn't support it.

Thanks everyone for advice.

Where can I find the subtitles on the DVD? Are they retrievable from the DVD? How do I covert them to .srt format?

When you say find them on the internet - where? I assume I can find them for some big Hollywood blockbusters - but what if this is a less well known movie? (For example I am trying to rip the Sherlock Holmes series - the original British series, not the American one.)

Thanks again.

1. Prerip the DVD to your hard disk
2. Analyse and extract/OCR subs with Subtitle Edit (PC, don't know what's available for MAC's)

On the internet try http://www.opensubtitles.org/en ..... You may be surprised what's available there.
