MPEG 2 files with subtitles from TiVo...

Post by jerry7171 »

I have a TiVo that I'm using to record all the great programming from cable while using kmttg to pull the HD files to my Mac Mini, convert them to MPEG 2 files, then I use MPEG Streamclip to edit the file for commercials, etc. Finally I double check the final MPEG 2 file with VLC to make sure everything is smooth. All the while, the closed captions remain intact and spot on from what I can see in VLC. I even see my choice of English, Spanish or hearing impaired for a choice of tracks in VLC. So far so good until I get to HandBrake. At this point, the file is an bloated 10gigs and I'd like to convert it to MP4 anyway. What I'm being stymied by is HandBrake's inability to see any of the closed caption files. Here is the Activity log so far:

I comb through the log above but nothing leaps out at me as being a closed caption or subtitle file. Am I overlooking something here? I'm not entirely wet behind the ears where HandBrake is concerned. I've used it almost since the good ol' PPC days and while I've dallied with other programs, I always ended up coming back as HandBrake was just that much more forgiving and friendly.

If anyone can point out what I'm missing, I'd really appreciate it!

I think it's the "other streams" listed, they're closed captions. You'll see it in the encode log (scroll to last line here):

Great, that's good that HB sees the closed caption streams, but what is still befuddling me is when I jump on the GUI and scroll over to the subtitle tab, I click on it, there is nothing to chose there. The only thing HB gives me for a choice is to import a subtitle file. Am I doing something wrong? I click on the tab under the subtitle for options and there is nothing listed there at all.

I don't think they're supported.

Can you provide a sample we can look at? It's got to be small and short, but do contain actual subtitles packets…

I'll have to wait until another movie comes along. I ripped the movie in question into the standard MP4 and trashed the original file afterwards. When I do have something, I'll post it here along with the usual logs for comparison (a small, short bit as requested). I find it curious that VLC had no problem seeing the closed caption streams, but HB was blind to them. Something tells me that all the transcoding and prior editing of the file and enclosed streams somehow ends up confusing HB but I'm not sure were to look in the process that could pinpoint it.

I think I have same question. I recorded a TS file from harddisk TV recorder. When I use VLC on mac, I can choose to display subtitle by VLC/ Video / Subtitles Track/ DVB subtitles. However, in Handbrake, it can't detect there is a subtitle there. Pls try the attached TS file link. Thanks.

We don't support DVB subtitles yet.

The sample is a bit big, but thanks anyway.

Hi ! Any idea of a date for DVB subtitles support ? It is really what's missing (for me) in HB.

No idea. Definitely not in the next release (the nightly is what you'll get in terms of features, as we're in code freeze).
