Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
X-Files, Season 9, Disc 5.. episode "The Truth" (1:45 finale).
Crashes somewhere between 75-100% encoding completion; encoding in H.264, 2500kbps, 2pass encoding (no turbo pass), AC3 audio, and the following advanced options: "level=41:ref=1:bframes=3:subq=5:me=umh:no-fast-pskip=1:cabac=0:trellis=1". Tried both from DVD and from ripped DVD on hard drive (using MacTheRipper). Using a 20" Al iMac with a [Censored] UJ-85J drive.

Problems w/Complete Monty Python
I have "The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus" which comprises 16 DVDs. I ripped them to my Mac using MacTheRipper 2.6.6 then converted them to the iPod using HandBrake 0.9.1 using the "iPod Low-Rez" preset. When I converted them I only converted titles that contained actual content (so a title that contained, say, 30 seconds was skipped while a title that contained 30m45s was run through HandBrake). I ran into two problems.
DVD #1 (entitled "PYTHON_1_FIX") ripped fine via MacTheRipper. HandBrake saw five titles in the ripped DVD. Title 1 was 2m51s, title 2 was 29s, title 3 was 31m17s, title 4 was 32m57s, and title 5 was 30m51s. I skipped titles 1 & 2 and told HandBrake to convert titles 3, 4, and 5. However, only title 3 was successfully converted (into a 192.7MB file). Titles 4 & 5 were 'converted' into 4k files (1,583 bytes each) that, when opened, show only a single white frame.
DVD #3 (titled "PYTHON_3") also ripped fine via MacTheRipper. When I point HandBrake to it, it shows only a single title (1m51s) and nothing else. It doesn't see any of the other content on the ripped DVD. If I convert that via HandBrake, I get the same 4k/1,583 bytes/single white frame that I got from the titles on the first DVD.
HandBrake doesn't seem to have any problem with any of the content on the remaining 14 DVDs. (Admittedly I haven't sat through all of the HandBrake-generated files I've created so far, but they all appear to be there in quantity anyway.) I've confirmed that the content is on the ripped DVDs as I can play all of the content on the ripped DVDs without a problem, and I've tried re-ripping my original DVDs to no avail.
Following is the activity log from attempting to convert title 1 from DVD #3. The log for DVD #1 is similar.

Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
HB will only encode half of "Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle" and hardly any of "Friday" using mac osx 10.4.1 and iPod low-rez setting.
the real crime is that i bought both these movies and apple has made it so difficult for me to enjoy the many amazing jokes and ridiculous situations that they have to offer while i'm on the move.
i've been reading through this thread though and i'm gonna try some of the other options to encode...thanks for offering at least potential solutions.

Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
Following up on my previous Monty Python issue...
Running Handbrake 0.9.2 under XP SP2, Handbrake only saw title 1 (2m51s) on DVD #1 (entitled "PYTHON_1_FIX"). It didn't see any other title on that disc. Ditto for DVD #3 ("PYTHON_03") where title 1 was 1m51s. So there's definitely something weird happening with these two discs and Handbrake; the OS clearly isn't at fault.

Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
I'm a novice at this but, I couldn't get the entire disk of Entourage season 1 (disk 1 or 2) and the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie to rip. Others have ripped fine...
Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
Blade Runner, Director's Cut
I tried HandBrake alone, first. Then, FairMount followed by HandBrake. Then, FairMount followed by MacTheRipper. Then, FairMount, followed by DVD2oneX2 and HandBrake. I even payed for and tried DVDRemaster somewhere in that mix. All efforts produced the same result: a viewable movie, but with the audio track present but not synchronized with the video track. And, the audio track is not reliably off by a few seconds throughout, but comes in far too early at the beginning of the movie and is gradually in-sync by the end. So, simply trimming the video separate from the audio track doesn't do the trick. I've ripped several hundred movies by now, and have never encountered this problem. Thoughts? Oh, by the way, on the DVD itself, the audio and video are perfectly in-sync.

Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
The combo that works for me is the following: (Sorry it uses XP and OSX!) I have all current versions as of 4.17.08.
In Windows XP make sure you have DVD Region+CSS Free 5.9.8.5 installed, and set it to load up with your ripping software.
Mainly I use DVDFab HD Decrypter 4 4.1.2.0 (which is Free), to try my first rip. This works 90% of the time on Movie Only, if that don't work rip the whole disc (Most Disney's). This so far fills in the rest. If I have to rip the whole disc, I go back and use DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 to get the movie only, as this is pretty fast, on the DVD9 preset.
Once I have the files on my drive, I either use Handbrake on my Mac or PC. Mainly on my MAC, but I have never had a file that won't convert in HandBrake.
For Kicks I now and again try Mac The Ripper, but it only works 50% of the time. The key I have found for the past few years is DVD Region+CSS Free. As a bonus it always makes sure its upto date, and that your DMA is always on!! Which in XP is a good thing. This is the only reason I have XP on my Mac. All my rips are in boot camp, if I use the Mac. I have never tried it in XP running in OSX!!
With the following movies on the list that I have had no problem with:
-40 Year Old Virgin
-Casino Royal (ARccOS & RipGuard)
-Chicken Little
-Deja Ve
-Enchanted
-Happily N'ever after
-Hostel (ARccOS & RipGuard)
-Ice Age 2
-Lords of Dog Town
-Madagascar
-Monster House
-Open Season
-Over the Hedge
-Pink Panther
-Pirates of the Caribbean 2
-Ratatouille (Rips with HB 0.9.2)
-Saw III
-SawIV
-Shoot 'Em Up
-Talladega Nights (ARccOS & RipGuard)
-The Condemned
-The Davinci Code (ARccOS & RipGuard)
-The Prestige
-The U.S. -Vs. John Lennon
-Underworld Evolutions
-Wallace & Gromit Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Spider-Man 3 [PAL]
Attempted to encode with enchanced iPod settings, 720x304, 1700 kbps video, 128 kbps Dolby Surround audio, 44.1 khz, chapter markers.
Running v. 0.9.2, 10.5 Leopard on an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac.
It started choking at around 0.36-0.39 %, when it started going so slow I swear it was going backwards.

Same thing - got BEE ripped, but HB crashes during the scan of the video folder. I was able to use Toast 8, Toast 9 and Visual Hub to extract the main feature to Apple TV format.

Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
Casino Royale normal dvd. i am trying to convert to mp4 with h.264 video and aac and ac3 sound. the ac3 (surround sound) is off by a significant amount. stereo works fine. for more info see Audio and picture off by a significant amount. mp4 with ac3 post.
Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
Hi, I'm fairly new to Handbrake, but I've just tried ripping Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with the standard iPhone/iPod Touch settings and it just wont do it at all. It scans the disk OK and then when i press start it automatically says that it's finished encoding.
Any ideas?

Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
If all else fails try RipIt4Me. It's a windows program (I use Parallels) and can be hard to find, but it's worked on every DVD I've thrown at it. Anything MTR3 would not do, RipIt4Me worked flawlessly on. You'll also need DVD Decrypter to go along with it as it uses DVD Decrypter to do the actual ripping.

Enchanted Full-Screen any settings. It never will begin to encode and the bar jumps to done in about 2 minutes.
Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
See my post immediately above yours. What ripping techniques have you tried so far? Or are you just encoding with HB directly off the DVD?powermacguy wrote:Enchanted Full-Screen any settings. It never will begin to encode and the bar jumps to done in about 2 minutes.

I'm trying to rip the "Star Wars: Clone Wars" (I think it's a Cartoon Network movie). When Handbrake finishes reading the source, it crashes... Anyone know what to do? I'd really like to take this one on the go!

By ripping you mean encoding/ripping directly from the DVD, I can only assume. Once again, before you even post here, you need to rip it to your hard disk first, and then try to open it with HB. By encoding directly of the DVD with HB you are putting undue stress on your optical drive.Slippytoad wrote:I'm trying to rip the "Star Wars: Clone Wars" (I think it's a Cartoon Network movie). More importantly, the Mac version of Handbrake can't handle the newer copy protection systems and the Windows version can't handle encrypted discs at all. Pre-ripping to HDD is recommended in the Handbrake FAQ.
Please take the time to read it before posting. Thank you.

Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
The full pilot episode from "Earth 2" doesn't work. Handbrake rips about 85% of it and then it stops. I tried preripping it with MTR and then using handbrake but, the same thing happens.

Try putting it through DTOX if you have it. If not, the only other free solution I know of that might fix your problem is RipIt4Me for Windows. I use it on my Mac through Parallels and it works wonderfully.

the real crime is that i bought both these movies and apple has made it so difficult for me to enjoy the many amazing jokes and ridiculous situations that they have to offer while i'm on the move.
i've been reading through this thread though and i'm gonna try some of the other options to encode...thanks for offering at least potential solutions.
How is the copy protection or intentional bad mastering done by the releasing studios Apple's fault? You want to blame someone, blame the studios.
Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
Rendition does not allow HB 0.9.2 to show main title (Title drop down starts at #5, Main title is #1), just the director's making of the film. Used AnyDVD to rip to HD via boot camp. Allowed HB to find main title.
Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
Hi there, just tried to rip the TV series 'My So Called Life' (disc 1), but everytime i try it seems to crash Handbrake during scanning. Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
Have you read the thread, and have you tried any of the solutions to previous problems listed above? Are you going straight from DVD or have you already ripped to your HDD. In case you didn't notice, it is recommended that you rip the DVD to your HDD first using MTR, put the resulting rip through DTOX, and then open with HB. If you are still having problems with it at that point, there is a Windows solution.
