Quicktime does not play my file in Lion

Post by eliotf »

This may not be a Handbrake issue but a Mac OS issue. I just upgraded to Lion and now when I rip a SD DVD and use the AppleTV 3 preset I cannot play the file with QuickTime Player. I get a message that says "This movie could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." If I use other players like NicePlayer it plays fine. Also, if I use iTunes to play the movie it plays fine. If I try to open a movie that I ripped with Handbrake in 2011, QuickTime Player is able to open it. I believe the older file was made with the AppleTV 2 preset.

This is probably a combination of Handbrake's new Apple TV3 preset and Lion. If anyone knows how to get quicktime to play it let me know.

Many thanks.

I definitively have a similar problem. Quicktime asks for a codec, whereas Spotlight or even the system can read it.

Re: Quicktime does not play my file in Lion

FWIW, I have experienced the same issue. It only happened with one specific movie so far: The Rum Diary.

I have successfully encoded several dozen other DVD's. WIth this one, the same behavior as previously described. I used the "Apple TV3" preset, turned on English subtitles and started the queue. When finished, I could not open with QT, but could open with VLC. I then added to iTunes and was able to play from within iTunes.

Couple of oddities with this movie:

1. There is no "Closed Caption" subtitle track on the DVD, only two bitmap English subtitle tracks (and one Spanish)
2. I encoded with the first English subtitle track (seems like the non-SDH?)
3. I can turn on subtitles in VLC, can't turn it on in iTunes player

Hope this helps. I had shutdown handbrake before I realized I had a problem so I don't have the activity window. Should I re-run the movie through handbrake and post the activity log? or does the previously posted one give you all enough info?

Thanks for a great app!

Vobsub in mp4 is not widely supported and may in fact be flagged as a corrupt file with many players.

Thank you for that additional info. You were correct.

I re-encoded the DVD *without* the subtitles and it opened in QuickTime just fine. So it was the bitmap subtitles that were messing up QT.

First movie I've come across that didn't have text based closed captions.

Thanks again.

Yep, that seems to be it.
I ran a test and ripped a chapter with:
no subtitle = opened up fine in QT and VLC
bitmap sub burned in = opened up fine in QT and VLC
bitmap sub not burned in = did not open in QT, opened in VLC (subs worked!), opened in iTunes (subs did NOT work)
closed captions sub not burned in = opened fine in QT (subs worked!), opened fine in VLC (subs did NOT work), opened in iTunes (subs worked!)

I had exactly the same issues with Quicktime and "soft" subtitles.
One way to spare you the time to re-rip is to open your file with MpegStreamclip and do a "Save as" from the File menu.
This will remove the "txt codec" while keeping the original file's audio and video.
You will be able to open it with Quicktime then.
